A Mars Hotel show is always an energetic evening of good vibes, good music, and good community.When it became apparent that Jerry Garcia had played his final show in 1995, Stu Allen began working to keep Garcia’s music, sound, and spirit alive in the concert setting. He regularly worked with Phil Lesh and has also played sets with Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann. Allen is perhaps most known for fronting Melvin Seals’ tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band from 2004 to 2011. He received more national acclaim in 2010 when he toured with Dark Star Orchestra. Papiba is a master of Capoeira, an Afro Brazilian martial art form created by Brazilian slaves, which draws on music and acrobatic movements. Dandha was born into the rich Afro Brazilian traditions of Salvador, Bahia and the Carnival Group Ile Aiye, and started her dancing career at age 6. Ilê Aiyê has been in the forefront of Civil Rights in Brazil, promoting equality and justice, and is widely recognized as the first Afro Brazilian BLOCO or group to perform in Brazil’s notorious Carnival celebrations.The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. Mohammad started playing Ney from the age of 15 through strong self-discipline and coaching of Masters of Ney such as Mr. Hassan Kassai, and Mr. A. Afsharnia. He has also studied the Persian radif and techniques of singing with Master Hatam Askari &amp; Seddigh Tarif. He learned to play the piano with Rosita Shaker and Tamara Dolidze in Iran and continued with Andreas Taller in Austria. Mohammad learned composition with Master Alireza Mashayekhi, Professor Soyka and Erland Freudenhaler. The ensemble, whose geographical roots range from Jamaica and South America to West Africa and the U.S., began joining together their musical forces and international backgrounds during the early 1970s. Out of such predecessors as Obeah and the Sons of Creation, the Caribbean Allstars were formed and became the founding fathers of Bay Area roots reggae. Although many musicians have come through the band since its founding, it has long been guided by its director, Trinidad-born drummer Hugh “Sweetfoot” Maynard.The Caribbean Allstars not only play Jamaican reggae with a traditional electric bass-drums-guitars-keyboards lineup, but also add steel drums to bring in South Caribbean calypso and soca styles of Trinidad and Tobago, producing rhythms that drive listeners to the dance floor.Over the years the band has performed with an array of talent sitting in, including Taj Mahal, Narada Michael Walden, and Carlos Santana. Santana played on their second album and introduced them as “my favorite band” at the 1987 Bay Area Music Awards (Bammies). She has been passionate about mandolin since she joined Sierra Hull on stage at age 9, and is finishing her senior high school year in the jazz program at Oakland School for the Arts.Miles Quale A fiddler from Alameda, CA, Miles is a founder and core member of Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band. He’s recorded multiple albums since age twelve and tours nationally and internationally; Crying Uncle was recognized as the 2023 IBMA Band of the Year.Ruby Davis Ruby is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Bay Area Special, a bluegrass band based in San Jose, CA. Fronting the group, she’s known for strong lead vocals that bring a fresh take to traditional bluegrass and for steady work across the Northern California bluegrass circuit.Finn Tobias Finn is a flatpicking guitarist active in the Pacific Northwest and West Coast old-time and bluegrass scenes. He’s taught bluegrass guitar through the Seattle Bluegrass Club and has been featured on the Get Up in the Cool old-time music podcast, performing festival-tested fiddle tunes and standards. Ryan Triolo Ryan is an upright bassist from the Bay Area who anchors the low end for Bay Area Special. He performs widely in Northern California, bringing modern acoustic and jazz-influenced bass work to bluegrass and new acoustic projects.Judah Rosenheim Judah is a multi-instrumentalist from Pacifica, CA, rooted in bluegrass but active across jazz, and modern acoustic music. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America.For over twenty years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of brazilian culture. Papiba is a master of Capoeira, an Afro Brazilian martial art form created by Brazilian slaves, which draws on music and acrobatic movements. Dandha was born into the rich Afro Brazilian traditions of Salvador, Bahia and the Carnival Group Ile Aiye, and started her dancing career at age 6. Ilê Aiyê has been in the forefront of Civil Rights in Brazil, promoting equality and justice, and is widely recognized as the first Afro Brazilian BLOCO or group to perform in Brazil’s notorious Carnival celebrations.The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. He spent 25 years touring the globe with Beausoleil, from all 50 U.S. states to Europe and the Middle East, and performing at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and two presidential inaugurations for Presidents Bush and Obama. This period included his notable work on Mary Chapin Carpenter’s hit "Down at the Twist &amp; Shout" and performances at the Grammy and Country Music Awards. He is in the fourth generation of his family to play Cajun music. His great aunt, Cléoma Breaux Falcon, sang and played on the very first Cajun record to be issued back in 1928, “Allons à Lafayette.” His grandfather, Amédée Breaux, made the very first recording of “Jolie Blonde.” Jimmy will be joined by his friends Suzy Thompson, Eric Thompson, Allegra Thompson and Mark Marcin. Eric Thompson's flatpicking on guitar and mandolin is exceptional for its purity of tone, speed, and soulfulness; Suzy is a powerful singer, an award-winning fiddler and Cajun accordion player who has apprenticed with older generation Louisiana Cajun musicians under an NEA Fellowship. Founding members of many influential roots music groups including the Black Mountain Boys, Any Old Time, the Klezmorim, and the California Cajun Orchestra, Eric and Suzy have also worked with Maria Muldaur, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Jerry Garcia, Darol Anger, Laurie Lewis, the Savoy Doucet Cajun Trio, and many other fine musicians. <h2>Doors 6:30pm</h2><h2>Show 7pm</h2>Cantadora &amp; The Hot Clams is a music collective featuring Kitka vocalist Kristine Barrett that presents sultry folk and jazz from Sephardic Spain, Italy, Greece, and Corsica, plus bossa nova and jazz manouche. The group is based in Marin County. The Iavnana Georgian Ensemble is a choir dedicated to the performance of traditional polyphonic music from the Republic of Georgia, Lazona, and neighboring Caucasus, Black Sea, and Baltic regions. Comprised of the words “ia” (violet) and “nana” (mother goddess), the ensemble borrows its name from a type of healing song. Violets were often present in healing ceremonies, representative of joy and a euphemism for the goddess of the underworld in Georgian folk poetry. “Nana” is a derivative of the name “Inanna”—an ancient mother goddess found throughout the Near East. The project’s aim is to explore music as a form of healing and connection, both to each other as a community of practice, and to broader engagements with the cultures and communities from which we draw our musical content. She discovered her love of old-time music while living in Nashville, and has had the bug ever since. Love Mischief's Almost Dead

Nikolay Kolev and Donka Koleva have invited two extraordinary musicians to join them for the 2025 tour: Stoyan Kostov on tambura and Anton Shekerjiev on tupan and kaba gaida.Donka Koleva (vocals) is a native of the village of Tuzha in the Stara Zagora region of Thrace. She graduated from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka, Bulgaria, and performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. She was director of the Folk Song Chorus of Sopot, has been a featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio-TV, has participated in numerous singing competitions in Bulgaria and Europe and has been featured on numerous recordings. In 1997 her recording of Javore was named “Song of the Year” in the Bulgarian national radio competition. Since immigrating to the U.S. she has taught and performed widely across N. America, both privately and at numerous camps, festivals and other events. In addition to her vocal talents Donka serves as Bulgarika’s manager and has organized 12 national tours for the bands Kabile’, Cherven Traktor, Bulgarika and the Kolev Family Ensemble.Nikolay (Kotata) Kolev (gadulka) a native of the Thracian Rose Valley village of Karavelovo, has been playing gadulka since age 10. After graduating from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka, Bulgaria, he performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. In 1984 he founded the orchestra “Sopot”. In 1985 he formed the wedding-music ensemble “Rozova Dolina” and in 1992 the prize-winning ensemble “Balkanski Glasove”. In 1994 and 1995 the latter group took first prizes at the Varna Festival. Nikolay has accompanied many well-known singers including Vulkana Stojanova, Roumen Rodopski and Todor Kozhuharov. He has also taught many students at a number of Balkan camps in the U.S. In 1999, Nikolay was the first Bulgarian to be recognized by the Slavic Heritage Council of America for hisoutstanding contributions to music.Stoyan (Pileto) Kostov has been playing Bulgarian tambura for over 50 years. He graduated from the folk music school in Kotel and the Plovdiv Academy of Music and Dance. Stoyanperformed with Ensemble Trakiya and played tambura with Harmanliska Troika, and guitar with the Ograzhden ensemble in Sandanski, where he also directed the “N. Vaptsarov” FolkEnsemble. Currently he lives in Phoenix, AZ.Anton (Shekera) Shekerdjiev developed a deep appreciation for traditional music from a young age. Born into a family of musicians in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, his father’s performances at weddings in the Thracian Valley instilled in him a profound understanding of the region’s vibrant musical culture. He formed a Balkan music band with fellow Bulgarian musicians brothers Hristevi in Spain, touring extensively throughout the Iberian Peninsula. He relocated to the United States, where he formed the band Kyklo with an American musician deeply inspired by Balkan music. This 38th installment of this Bay Area tradition will be held at Ashkenaz in Berkeley and will feature Live Music, Rare Films, Nyabinghi Drumming and more.Attendees will enjoy rare footage of Peter Tosh’s early life. Live music will be provided by Jahdan Blakkamoore, Sampalue, Rastareens, and Jahwarri, all backed by The Brickyard Band.The host of the evening is local celebrity radio DJ Spliff Skankin who will be spinning starting at 6pm.The Out Of Many One Nyabinghi Drummers will also be performing ceremonial Rastafarian drumming and chanting.Peter Tosh, the “Stepping Razor”, was a Rastafarian, and in keeping with his beliefs, the entire event will be performed by Rastafarian practitioners. The public is welcome to come and enjoy this pure “Rasta” ceremony.This event is produced by Carl T. He is Peter Tosh’s cousin and grew up with him as well as toured with Tosh as his cook. He says, “We have celebrated Peter Tosh’s birthday one way or the other since his passing in 1987. Now based in Oakland, Okie assembled a zydeco rhythm section featuring members of soul band Emily Day &amp; the Knights and honky-tonkers The Country Business.
