He was still a teenager when Love and Misery became a hit on SiriusXM’s The Coffee House channel, introducing a nationwide audience to his unique spin on American roots music. What followed was a decade of traveling, performing, and chasing down new horizons — often with an acoustic guitar in his hands and a fly rod in the trunk.Making A Livin’ (Not a Killin’) marks Leon’s fourth album in five years. Inspired by the tours that have taken him far beyond his adopted home of Nashville, it’s the sound of a road warrior who’s grown all too familiar with the highs, lows, and heartbreaks that pave the long road out of town. He writes poignantly about a life spent on the move, bouncing between solo songs and full-band performances. Celebrated for his work with Americana mainstays like Colter Wall, Lyons became a mentor to Leon during his first year in Nashville, back when he was struggling to balance his songwriting career with a long series of day jobs. Eventually, with Pat’s encouragement, he embraced the troubadour lifestyle, dedicating himself to the stage, the road, and the writing room. Working with a small rhythm section, the two collaborators recorded Making A Livin’ (Not a Killin’) during a pair of whirlwind days, leaning heavily on live performances and Leon’s strength as a stage performer. They also teamed up with Riley Downing (of The Deslondes) for “Tallahassee,” a duet steeped in the influence of New Orleans. The result is an album about tour stops, roadside revelations, and the lessons learned at 75 miles per hour.There are more shows on the horizon. More songs to write. More fishing holes to track down. Leon is part of the Cloverdale family now — a record label and musical collective overseen by Evan Honer, another Gen Z songwriter who uses folk music as a launchpad for a more expansive sound. Though undoubtedly influenced by his parents' record collections and old, faded product design, the Com Truise project doesn't only pull from the past. Hints of Joy Division, New Order, and Cocteau Twins bubble up in every prismatic piece, but it's as if they're processed through a waterlogged game consolewarped, cybernetic, and high-definition. Somehow, Com Truise sounds both familiar and uncanny, and always beautifully handmade.The first Com Truise release was the Cyanide Sisters EP, where mellow zone-outs were juxtaposed with IDM bangers and bumpy, trippy synth-funk. Once Haley joined the Ghostly roster, his tale of the character "Com Truise", the first robot astronaut, took flight on his debut album, the critically acclaimed Galactic Melt. Multiple EPs and 2012's In Decay, a collection of B-sides and rarities, expanded the backstory and narrative, taking the AI protagonist through unknown galaxies and war-torn planets. He even finds love and wrestles with heartbreakof course, only in the ways a sophisticated android can.Six years after this saga began, Iteration finally wraps up Haley's sprawling narrative, doing so with the most refined music of his career. The album illustrates the last moments Com Truise spends on the perilous planet Wave 1, before he and his love escape its clutches to live in peace. It's also the most personal record Haley has written to date, as the story mirrors his personal struggles of moving across the country and overcoming creative burnout. But Iteration is ultimately a story of triumph and self-realization, told by the singular, emotionally resonant sound of a man and his machines.

Cope Family JamThis is a special event celebrating the legacies of OBJ and the Crowbar. The inaugural Orange Blossom Jamboree (OBJ) music and art festival was held in May of 2010 at the Sertoma Youth Ranch in Brooksville, Florida. Founded by Russ and Toby Bowers, it was established as a showcase for Florida-based jam bands and improvisational music. This concert is brought to you by artists who are a part of the OBJ extended family and the Crowbar which has long been a cultural lighthouse hosting artists on the rise, some of which have won GRAMMYs and achieved international superstardom such as Doechii, Chappell Roan, Portugal. The Man, Future Islands, and many more. Although bygone are the days when the OBJ festival was in its ascension, its legacy continues to evolve and many individuals within it have gone on to achieve incredible success. For example, Andy Lytle, who is Billy String’s front of house sound engineer, was instrumental as both a musician and on the sound tech side of things in developing the festival. Roosevelt Collier is another artist who performed at OBJ who has since gone on to collaborate with modern jazz fusion luminaries Snarky Puppy and is currently the music director for Jelly Roll. Many of the artists who performed at the first few years of the festival are still performing today. Bands break-up, people move, families bloom, the sacred circle of life happens but the spirit of the music endures in perpetuity. This event is a convocation for musicians, artists, former OBJ festival goers, supporters of independent venues and artists, and all supporters of live original music from right here in Florida. There are three featured sets and a finale jam hosted by members of the band Cope, one of the biggest original bands in the Florida jam scene. The jams will go late into the night and many more special guest bands and artist sit-ins are TBA. What is important is that you are there to support this event. The jams will go late into the night. There is space to dance and to headbang. There is a welcoming aura to this event and your support enriches the great memories we have of both of these amazing institutions of music to Florida. We are saddened and bracing for the inevitable loss we will all feel when the Crowbar too becomes a memory. Singer/guitarists Wyn Barnum and Ricky Dana met at a tiny technical college lacking much of an indie scene. Pulling in Wyn’s childhood friend, bassist James Fusco, the three college boys bonded over a love of midwest emo. But while you may find a tinge of that teen angst that comes with youth, Phoneboy are ready to turn up. Phoneboy’s early efforts quickly earned a following on social media. Serving as a de facto street team, fraternity brothers shared the band’s breakout, ACID GIRL far and wide. Before they knew it these floppy-haired crooners had racked up over a million streams across the web. It’s the kind of word-of-mouth buzz that makes you think the internet wasn’t such a bad idea.“There’s definitely a tension there,” says Wyn, speaking to social media. “There’s all this distraction, all this fake fun everybody’s pretending to have, but at the same time the discovery potential is insane.” Coming of age in a global pandemic, the band sure are sharing lots of experiences. Remote learning has offered them plenty of time to work on their sound; flipping through files on yes, their phones, to piece together bits and bobs of riffs and licks. It’s commendable to come off so easy breezy in these uncertain times, but Phoneboy makes it look like no big deal. Their joyous jams and shuffling beats come right on time to get your butt off the couch.
