Dear Reader, Thank you for scanning the QR code! The George Floyd Square Community Visioning Council (GFSCVC) proudly invites you to join your Minneapolis friends, elected officials, family, and neighborhood associations from the Central, Powderhorn, and Bancroft neighborhoods for a community town hall on George Floyd Square.The purpose of this town hall is to unify Minneapolis communities for action and to stand in solidarity with the GFSCVC. We are more than what happened here on May 25, 2020. We are a vibrant, thriving, historically and culturally Black neighborhood that has long since grown diverse, with communities of all racial backgrounds. We want to tell our story and help support the most economically disadvantaged among us due to a legacy of racism in America and in Minneapolis. The GFSCVC has been engaged in democratic conversation with the city for six years regarding the development of 38th and Chicago, and the neighborhood associations around us have been engaged in an even longer conversation about development in and around 38th Street to revive economic and social opportunity in the area — which was also the focus of the Thirty-Eighth Street Thrive Plan, already adopted by the city with $1 million allocated.For six years now, the city has been ignoring the community's input and wishes despite our working closely alongside the city, building relationships with city staff and elected officials, doing the hard work of organizing multiple communities for their input, and following due process. Despite all of our hard work and effort, the city as of today is still, yet again, ignoring us and refusing to show support, respect, and care for the community. This is unjust, and we wish to make our voices heard. The city is responsible for the death of George Floyd, which happened in our neighborhood and sparked the largest civil rights movement globally since the 1960s. It is now deemed the largest movement in U.S. history (Source: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/03/us/george-floyd-protests-crowd-size.html">The New York Times</a>, July 3, 2020). Instead of repairing the harm, ensuring racial equality, and respecting its own democratic processes, the city has only contributed to more collective trauma for our communities. We are asking people to show up, bring food—this event is a potluck—come be in community, learn alongside us, let their voices be heard, and help us win the 7 demands to keep the square in the community's hands.Can't make it? Implement the Community’s Vision Statement for the GFS NeighborhoodThese demands are reasonable, just, and will help to repair the harm that was done by the city. To learn more about the history of the 38th and Chicago neighborhood and the work that the GFSCVC has been doing, please watch the two videos below for more background history and context. This will help you to prepare for the town hall. We believe that education is liberation and a tool for effectively struggling against racism. Video 1 is about the memorial, and Video 2 is an open, intimate conversation with the Co-Chair of the CVC, Jennie, with the freckles. We go on a deep dive into the neighborhood, what community means to them, and the future of GFS.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="true" autoplay="false" disablekbcontrols="false" enableiframeapi="false" endtime="0" ivloadpolicy="0" loop="false" modestbranding="false" origin="" playlist="" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zoHB3dDXw5I" start="0"></iframe></div>&nbsp;
