Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to what’s happening while it’s happening, and respond skillfully to changes as they emerge, even when the changes are confusing or challenging. Mindfulness practice cultivates some of the same personal qualities that we need when we improvise, compose or perform: openness, presence, curiosity, courage, and a sense of generosity and compassion toward ourselves and others. We will explore how creativity and meditation intersect, and how meditation can help us build creative confidence both individually and in community with other artists. The group is open to everyone regardless of previous experience and drop-ins are welcome. The format includes meditation practice, discussion, and improvisation. Thursdays in September from 3-5:00. Suggested donation: $10 Mark Miller (MFA, California Institute of the Arts) is a Grammy-nominated flute and saxophone player and Emeritus Professor of Music at Naropa University. He has been practicing and teaching mindfulness for over 20 years, receiving lay ordination in the Zen Peacemaker Order in 1998, and certification as a Mindfulness Mentor in the Vipassana tradition of Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield in 2022. He is author of the book Being Music: The Art of Open Improvisation (with Art Lande) from University Professors Press.
