<h2>Doors 7:30pm Show 8pm</h2>Mohammad Khodadadi, born in 1979 in Bushehr, Iran, is a Ney player and a composer who has studied composition of western classical music at the university of Anton Bruckner in Linz/Austria. Mohammad started playing Ney from the age of 15 through strong self-discipline and coaching of Masters of Ney such as Mr. Hassan Kassai, and Mr. A. Afsharnia. He has also studied the Persian radif and techniques of singing with Master Hatam Askari &amp; Seddigh Tarif. He learned to play the piano with Rosita Shaker and Tamara Dolidze in Iran and continued with Andreas Taller in Austria. Mohammad learned composition with Master Alireza Mashayekhi, Professor Soyka and Erland Freudenhaler. She has been passionate about mandolin since she joined Sierra Hull on stage at age 9, and is finishing her senior high school year in the jazz program at Oakland School for the Arts.Miles Quale A fiddler from Alameda, CA, Miles is a founder and core member of Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band. He’s recorded multiple albums since age twelve and tours nationally and internationally; Crying Uncle was recognized as the 2023 IBMA Band of the Year.Ruby Davis Ruby is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Bay Area Special, a bluegrass band based in San Jose, CA. Fronting the group, she’s known for strong lead vocals that bring a fresh take to traditional bluegrass and for steady work across the Northern California bluegrass circuit.Finn Tobias Finn is a flatpicking guitarist active in the Pacific Northwest and West Coast old-time and bluegrass scenes. He’s taught bluegrass guitar through the Seattle Bluegrass Club and has been featured on the Get Up in the Cool old-time music podcast, performing festival-tested fiddle tunes and standards. Ryan Triolo Ryan is an upright bassist from the Bay Area who anchors the low end for Bay Area Special. He performs widely in Northern California, bringing modern acoustic and jazz-influenced bass work to bluegrass and new acoustic projects.Judah Rosenheim Judah is a multi-instrumentalist from Pacifica, CA, rooted in bluegrass but active across jazz, and modern acoustic music. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America.For over twenty years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of brazilian culture. Papiba is a master of Capoeira, an Afro Brazilian martial art form created by Brazilian slaves, which draws on music and acrobatic movements. Dandha was born into the rich Afro Brazilian traditions of Salvador, Bahia and the Carnival Group Ile Aiye, and started her dancing career at age 6. Ilê Aiyê has been in the forefront of Civil Rights in Brazil, promoting equality and justice, and is widely recognized as the first Afro Brazilian BLOCO or group to perform in Brazil’s notorious Carnival celebrations.The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. <h2>Doors 6pm</h2><h2>Beginner-Friendly Dance Lesson 6:30pm</h2><h2>Show 7pm</h2> Jimmy Breaux, longtime accordion player in the Grammy Award-winning group Beausoleil, is acknowledged to be one of the best Cajun accordionists of the modern era. He spent 25 years touring the globe with Beausoleil, from all 50 U.S. states to Europe and the Middle East, and performing at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and two presidential inaugurations for Presidents Bush and Obama. This period included his notable work on Mary Chapin Carpenter’s hit "Down at the Twist &amp; Shout" and performances at the Grammy and Country Music Awards. He is in the fourth generation of his family to play Cajun music. His great aunt, Cléoma Breaux Falcon, sang and played on the very first Cajun record to be issued back in 1928, “Allons à Lafayette.” His grandfather, Amédée Breaux, made the very first recording of “Jolie Blonde.” Jimmy will be joined by his friends Suzy Thompson, Eric Thompson, Allegra Thompson and Mark Marcin. Eric Thompson's flatpicking on guitar and mandolin is exceptional for its purity of tone, speed, and soulfulness; Suzy is a powerful singer, an award-winning fiddler and Cajun accordion player who has apprenticed with older generation Louisiana Cajun musicians under an NEA Fellowship. Founding members of many influential roots music groups including the Black Mountain Boys, Any Old Time, the Klezmorim, and the California Cajun Orchestra, Eric and Suzy have also worked with Maria Muldaur, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Jerry Garcia, Darol Anger, Laurie Lewis, the Savoy Doucet Cajun Trio, and many other fine musicians. Eric and Suzy's daughter Allegra Thompson (Aux Cajunals and the Midnite Ramblers) will be playing bass with the band. <h2>Doors 6:30pm</h2><h2>Show 7pm</h2>Cantadora &amp; The Hot Clams is a music collective featuring Kitka vocalist Kristine Barrett that presents sultry folk and jazz from Sephardic Spain, Italy, Greece, and Corsica, plus bossa nova and jazz manouche. The group is based in Marin County. The Iavnana Georgian Ensemble is a choir dedicated to the performance of traditional polyphonic music from the Republic of Georgia, Lazona, and neighboring Caucasus, Black Sea, and Baltic regions. Comprised of the words “ia” (violet) and “nana” (mother goddess), the ensemble borrows its name from a type of healing song. Violets were often present in healing ceremonies, representative of joy and a euphemism for the goddess of the underworld in Georgian folk poetry. “Nana” is a derivative of the name “Inanna”—an ancient mother goddess found throughout the Near East. The project’s aim is to explore music as a form of healing and connection, both to each other as a community of practice, and to broader engagements with the cultures and communities from which we draw our musical content. He’s performed alongside legends like, David Grisman, Mike Marshall, and Chris Thile, bringing both deep tradition and fearless innovation to his playing.Mark Schatz:Twice named International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bass Player of the Year, Mark Schatz has toured and recorded with a stellar array of artists including Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, John Hartford, Tim O'Brien, acoustic innovators Nickel Creek, Claire Lynch, and Sarah Jarosz.Ian Ly:Flatpicking guitarist Ian Ly is best known for his dynamic work with Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band, blending precision, tone, and drive beyond his years. A two-time IBMA Kids on Bluegrass selection and co-founder of Broken Compass Bluegrass, she’s toured internationally and shared stages opened for artists like Sierra Hull, Peter Rowan, and the Infamous Stringdusters. With her soulful vocals and fiery fiddle, Mei Lin bridges traditional roots and modern jamgrass energy.Christine Wilhoyte:Christine Wilhoyte grew up steeped in traditional bluegrass music. She discovered her love of old-time music while living in Nashville, and has had the bug ever since. In addition to playing banjo with Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick, she plays with a local band of women, Bitchcraft, as well as Jesse Appelman's West Coast Stringband Project, and calls the occasional square dance.This is a FREE, community-oriented event. Love Mischief's Almost Dead

Nikolay Kolev and Donka Koleva have invited two extraordinary musicians to join them for the 2025 tour: Stoyan Kostov on tambura and Anton Shekerjiev on tupan and kaba gaida.Donka Koleva (vocals) is a native of the village of Tuzha in the Stara Zagora region of Thrace. She graduated from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka, Bulgaria, and performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. She was director of the Folk Song Chorus of Sopot, has been a featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio-TV, has participated in numerous singing competitions in Bulgaria and Europe and has been featured on numerous recordings. In 1997 her recording of Javore was named “Song of the Year” in the Bulgarian national radio competition. Since immigrating to the U.S. she has taught and performed widely across N. America, both privately and at numerous camps, festivals and other events. In addition to her vocal talents Donka serves as Bulgarika’s manager and has organized 12 national tours for the bands Kabile’, Cherven Traktor, Bulgarika and the Kolev Family Ensemble.Nikolay (Kotata) Kolev (gadulka) a native of the Thracian Rose Valley village of Karavelovo, has been playing gadulka since age 10. After graduating from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka, Bulgaria, he performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. In 1984 he founded the orchestra “Sopot”. In 1985 he formed the wedding-music ensemble “Rozova Dolina” and in 1992 the prize-winning ensemble “Balkanski Glasove”. In 1994 and 1995 the latter group took first prizes at the Varna Festival. Nikolay has accompanied many well-known singers including Vulkana Stojanova, Roumen Rodopski and Todor Kozhuharov. He has also taught many students at a number of Balkan camps in the U.S. In 1999, Nikolay was the first Bulgarian to be recognized by the Slavic Heritage Council of America for hisoutstanding contributions to music.Stoyan (Pileto) Kostov has been playing Bulgarian tambura for over 50 years. He graduated from the folk music school in Kotel and the Plovdiv Academy of Music and Dance. Stoyanperformed with Ensemble Trakiya and played tambura with Harmanliska Troika, and guitar with the Ograzhden ensemble in Sandanski, where he also directed the “N. Vaptsarov” FolkEnsemble. Currently he lives in Phoenix, AZ.Anton (Shekera) Shekerdjiev developed a deep appreciation for traditional music from a young age. Born into a family of musicians in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, his father’s performances at weddings in the Thracian Valley instilled in him a profound understanding of the region’s vibrant musical culture. He formed a Balkan music band with fellow Bulgarian musicians brothers Hristevi in Spain, touring extensively throughout the Iberian Peninsula. He relocated to the United States, where he formed the band Kyklo with an American musician deeply inspired by Balkan music. He is a recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and has incorporated diverse influences, including zydeco, jazz, and country, into his traditional Cajun sound, documenting and sharing the history and culture of Cajun music through performance and education.Tom Rigney is one of the premier American Roots Music fiddle players on the planet. His band Tom Rigney and Flambeau–specializes in blazing Cajun and Zydeco two-steps, low-down Blues, funky New Orleans grooves, Boogie Woogie piano, and heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and waltzes. Much of the repertoire is composed by Rigney, but they mix in some classics from the Cajun/New Orleans songbook. <h2>Doors 7:30pm / Show 8pm</h2>The Caribbean Allstars are pioneers in the Bay Area reggae scene and longtime regulars at Ashkenaz. The ensemble, whose geographical roots range from Jamaica and South America to West Africa and the U.S., began joining together their musical forces and international backgrounds during the early 1970s. Out of such predecessors as Obeah and the Sons of Creation, the Caribbean Allstars were formed and became the founding fathers of Bay Area roots reggae. Although many musicians have come through the band since its founding, it has long been guided by its director, Trinidad-born drummer Hugh “Sweetfoot” Maynard. The Caribbean Allstars not only play Jamaican reggae with a traditional electric bass-drums-guitars-keyboards lineup, but also add steel drums to bring in South Caribbean calypso and soca styles of Trinidad and Tobago, producing rhythms that drive listeners to the dance floor. Over the years the band has performed with an array of talent sitting in, including Taj Mahal, Narada Michael Walden, and Carlos Santana. Santana played on their second album and introduced them as “my favorite band” at the 1987 Bay Area Music Awards (Bammies). This Wednesday features Spencer Krenz, Anna Elva, Scott Guberman &amp; Burt Lewis.This will be Spencer Krenz's (guitar) first time hosting a Ashkenaz Grateful Dead Night.Spencer is a 21 year old Bay Area native growing up in Mill Valley and now living In Berkeley in his senior year at UC Berkeley. Growing up in the Grateful Dead music scene, and now more recently being immersed in the California bluegrass scene, is absorbed by the rich Bay Area music scene rooted in Americana improvisation. Getting to play with artist at the Ashkenaz over the years and at various venues he has played with Anna Elva, Scott Guberman, and Burt Lewis (listed bellow) as well as Grahame Lesh, Zach Nugent, Alex Jordan, Joe Craven, and Bella Rayne. He's exited to bring his own interpretations and spirit to the table!Anna Elva (drums) brings dynamic energy and deep-pocket grooves to the mix, with a knack for psychedelic improvisation. Born &amp; raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Anna is a versatile percussionist with a relentless sense of rhythm. She is known for her ability to drive a jam into uncharted territory. Anna can be found on stage with some of the Bay Area's most notable jam/improvisational rock musicians like Reed Mathis, Stu Allen, Matt Hartle, Mark Karan, Joe Craven, Scott Guberman, Jon Chi, Alex Jordan and bands such as China Dolls, American Beauties, Smokedaddies, Like a Rose, Lovin' Dead, Jenerator and many others. Anna also performs the music of Phish, Zappa and Grateful Dead across the country with Marcus Rezak. She is the proud mother to Levon and honored to be director/drum instructor at Music Time in Livermore.Scott Guberman (keys) broke into the Grateful Dead scene at the turn of the millennium. He first gained recognition as a Hammond organist performing heavily with Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Famer and former Grateful Dead keyboardist, Tom Constanten; and touring with Grateful Dead’s final keyboardist, Vince Welnick. Scott began playing with Phil Lesh and Friends in 2015, most notably during the re-creation shows that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. Guberman was also a member of Lesh’s band Communion. Now a staple of the Bay Area's thriving music scene, Guberman has played with just about every band and musician that’s a part of it. When not touring and playing across the U.S. with almost every professional band that plays the music of the Grateful Dead and more, Guberman tours internationally with The Gilmour Project and Live Dead and Brothers.Burt Lewis (bass) is one of the Bay Area’s top bass players in the Grateful Dead idiom, bringing deep-pocket grooves and improvisational fire to every stage. A vital member of Jerry’s Middle Finger, Like a Rose, and a frequent collaborator with Midnight North and Lebo &amp; Friends, Burt has become a cornerstone of the region’s jam scene. He is a special guest on legend rocker Mark Knopfler’s recent CD, “Tracker.” You can see Bruce on the BBC TV “Transatlantic Sessions” with Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, and on “David Holt’s State of Music” on PBS.Making their West Coast debut at the BOTMC, the Ozark Highballers are a four piece string band from Fayetteville, Arkansas, in western Arkansas’ Ozark mountains. Their music reflects the spirit and drive of the rural Ozark string bands of the 1920s and '30s. This old-fashioned ensemble, formed in 2014, features the dynamic melody duo of Roy Pilgrim on fiddle and Seth Shumate on harmonica, accompanied by the intricate string tickling of Clarke Buehling (winner of the Charlie Poole banjo contest in North Carolina!) on five-string banjo, and the driving chords and bass runs of Aviva Steigmeyer on guitar. The Ozark Highballers have performed and taught at the Brooklyn Folk Festival, Stepehen Foster Old-time Week, Bluff Country Gathering, St. Louis Folk &amp; Roots, CROMA, Ozark Folk Center, and have recently received the Artist 360 grant from the Mid-America Arts Alliance.Jake Blount, an award-winning and genre-defying Black and queer multi-instrumentalist and singer, fell in love with American traditional music when he was a teenager. Judy Hyman and Jeff Claus, founding members of the hugely influential alt-folk string band, The Horse Flies, met Jake when he was a student at Hamilton College, who would occasionally come to Ithaca, NY (their home town) for events. He was playing banjo then and getting started on fiddle. A very dedicated and quick learner, it was apparent his playing was growing fast. For Jake’s senior thesis, a history and cultural study of the fiddle music scene in Ithaca, he interviewed Judy and Jeff, and they became friends. Later, Jake asked them to help him produce his first album after college, Spider Tales. Judy and Jeff say: “We were honored and loved the collaboration and depth of the experience of working with Jake. We’re good friends now, and we love and respect him for his stellar musicianship and his skill as an artist, scholar, and activist. We always look forward to talking, seeing, and playing with him and to watching him make his wonderful way in the world." Jake has received many honors including the Steve Martin Banjo Prize and has performed at venues from Carnegie Hall to Library of Congress to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.Callers: Susan Michaels has been calling old-time square dances, family dances, and community dances for more than 35 years, including her hometown “chicken coop” square dance on Vashon Island in Washington. Susan specializes in building community, facilitating joy, and just plain having fun and she believes it is her calling in life to teach people how to hold hands in a circle and move to music. She has a unique gift for making kids, newcomers, 2 left-footers, and shy persons blossom through dance. Susan has been a featured artist at festivals and camps throughout the U.S. including the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention (CA), Dare2BSquare West (Oakland, Seattle, Portland),Pinewoods American and Family Weeks (MA), and many other gatherings and camps.Connor Maguire is a farmer who has played lots of different kinds of music. A few years ago he was bit by the old-time bug and took up the fiddle. Blake Miller comes from a multi-generational musical family in Iota, Louisiana – in the heart of Cajun country. He learned to play all the instruments traditionally found on a Cajun bandstand through his grandpa (world-renowned accordion maker Larry Miller of Bon Cajun Accordions), father, uncles, the late local accordion player Kenneth Thibodeaux, jam sessions at D.I.’s Cajun Restaurant, as well as the Augusta Cajun Week in Elkins, West Virginia. He started playing regular dances at the age of 14, and at 17, he began bringing his love of Louisiana French Music around the world with bands such as the Red Stick Ramblers, Cedric Watson &amp; Bijou Creole, and Pine Leaf Boys among others. He hosts a bilingual public radio show, La Lou Jukebox, on 88.7 fm, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://KRVS.org">KRVS.org</a>.The Aux Cajunals will serve as the band for the great Louisiana Cajun musician Blake Miller. They've backed up many other visiting great Cajun musicians, including Michael Doucet, Steve Riley and Ann Savoy. Bandleader Suzy Thompson apprenticed with Cajun master fiddler Dewey Balfa and learned accordion rom Danny Poullard. She rocks the fiddle, squeezes her Cajun accordions (handmade by Marc Savoy) and brings the Cajun-Creole and classic blues to life with her powerful vocals. Agi Ban, whose double fiddling with Suzy is a hallmark of the Aux Cajunals sound, switches to froittoir (vest rubboard) for the blues and zydeco numbers. Eric Thompson's lead guitar evokes a steel guitar on the Cajun songs and Freddie King on the R&amp;B songs. Allegra Thompson (daughter of Eric and Suzy) adds her strong lead singing and solid upright bass playing to anchor the sound of the band. Karen Celia Heil's powerful rhythm guitar and Michaelle Goerlitz's drumming combine to underpin the groove, and sometimes Karen adds a third fiddle to the mix when the band performs 150-year-old archaic tunes learned from Dennis McGee.. Members of the Aux Cajunals have performed and recorded with a “who’s who” of Cajun music royalty including Marc and Ann Savoy, D.L. Catherine Matovich, fiddle/vocals/Andrew’s dance partner, has jammed with Bo Diddley and plays in back up bands for pop stars, most recently the Eagles, Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis. Jim Scott, guitar, also plays with Jeffrey Broussard and Mark St. Mary. Jim is also a consummate rub board player and dancer. Elaine Herrick, bass, first met Andrew at a jam in Napa where he told her to watch his feet and she’d get it. In addition to CZ, Elaine also plays jazz, blues and classical. Tim Orr, drums, is the drummer we don’t deserve but are so grateful to have. He can follow anything. Tim has written for Drum magazine and currently works for the Monterey Jazz Festival. A Mars Hotel show is always an energetic evening of good vibes, good music, and good community.When it became apparent that Jerry Garcia had played his final show in 1995, Stu Allen began working to keep Garcia’s music, sound, and spirit alive in the concert setting. He regularly worked with Phil Lesh and has also played sets with Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann. Allen is perhaps most known for fronting Melvin Seals’ tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band from 2004 to 2011. He received more national acclaim in 2010 when he toured with Dark Star Orchestra. Allen shares the Grateful Dead’s commitment to making each performance a unique event, from preparation to execution. He will perform multiple shows before playing the same song twice, and even then, that song will not be realized in quite the same way.Mars Hotel takes this idea a step further by presenting a new band at each performance. <h2>Doors at 7:30PM Show at 8:00PM</h2>While Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring their profound knowledge and respect for the roots of Afro-brazilian song and dance, the entire band has developed a type of samba-reggae-funk with a universal appeal. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America.For over twenty years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of brazilian culture. Papiba is a master of Capoeira, an Afro Brazilian martial art form created by Brazilian slaves, which draws on music and acrobatic movements. Dandha was born into the rich Afro Brazilian traditions of Salvador, Bahia and the Carnival Group Ile Aiye, and started her dancing career at age 6. Ilê Aiyê has been in the forefront of Civil Rights in Brazil, promoting equality and justice, and is widely recognized as the first Afro Brazilian BLOCO or group to perform in Brazil’s notorious Carnival celebrations.The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. What unites this band from such diverse backgrounds is a magic that can be felt by both the band and the audience. SambaDá brings joy to each performance, and keeps their fans asking for more!!
