Cordovas are an Americana rock band out of Nashville whose sound, equal parts soulfulharmony, poetic craft, and cosmic improvisation, has long earned comparisons to The Band,Grateful Dead, and Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash. But with their fifth studio album, Back to Life (outJanuary 30, 2026, on Yep Roc Records), the group sharpens the edges of its identity: road-tested, deeply traditional in the ways that matter, and determined to be respected on its ownterms.The band’s heartbeat lies between two places. In Todos Santos, Mexico, where Cordovas havelived, written, and built a small community of artists, the songs take shape in their most relaxedstate, often amongst a circle of friends. Then it’s back to Nashville, where rehearsal, touring,and recording hammer those ideas into their final form. This cycle has defined the last threeyears of work, producing songs that are both varied and cohesive, each one revealing anotherside of the band’s range.At the center of Cordovas are songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Firstman andguitarist/vocalist Lucca Soria, partners in what they call a “musical friendship.” The new recordis a testament to their growth not just as musicians but as people. “I’m extremely blessed,”Firstman says. “Everywhere I look is love, and I set it up that way. My whole life is designedaround art, not around bills or phone calls. Everything is based on love and enthusiasm, and itradiates from there.”Soria frames it differently but with the same spirit of devotion: “People are at service to us, andwe are at service to them. I am incentivized to do my best all of the time in the service of others.In Mexico, it’s also a community. Everyone has a role, and I want to do the best I can for thecommunity.”That philosophy is embodied in the band’s communal compound in Todos Santos. Over theyears, Cordovas have acquired five houses there—each designed by Firstman, each tailored tothe people who live or pass through them. More than just residences, they function as creativehavens: a space where friends, collaborators, and fellow travelers are invited in to write songs,make demos, stage impromptu shows, or simply live alongside the band in a shared rhythm ofart and life. It’s not a retreat from the world but a way of reshaping it—an intentionalcommunity built around the belief that music thrives when it’s lived in, day after day, withothers.With Back to Life, Cordovas are also turning their focus toward something new: building abusiness framework that matches the artistry they’ve been cultivating for over a decade. Afteryears of keeping their heads down, writing, touring, and perfecting their sound, the band feelsthis is the record that can propel them into the space they’ve always deserved to occupy.They’ve worked harder than ever, not only on the songs themselves but on the structurearound them, bringing the same discipline and fire they apply to their music into the way theyrelease it. BLUE WIDOW Blue Widow is an alternative psychedelic punk band from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, blending political urgency with feral live energy. Known for their outspoken Louisiana-focused commentary and high-impact shows, the band has become a rallying point for young listeners who feel boxed in by the systems around them. Drawing influence from Rage Against the Machine, Turnstile, King Gizzard, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Blue Widow has carved out a loud, confrontational lane in the Southern underground. DANA IVES New Orleans’ finest swamp daddy duo, Dana Ives, was formed in 2018 when Matt Ernst and Ethan Wallace met at Loyola University. Both hailing from California, lead singer/guitarist Matt and drummer Ethan brought their respective talents down south, and within moments of meeting knew it was fate. Hence, their love child, Dana Ives, was born. Dana Ives is best described as the musical sweet spot where lucid, screeching guitar melodies lay overtop aggressively raw drums and vocals, providing the perfect marriage of alternative rock and post-punk. The band’s sound reflects Ernst’s upbringing in the Los Angeles garage-rock circuit and Wallace’s experience drumming in the California hardcore scene. Combined with their love for synthesizers and samples, Dana Ives creates a unique and dynamic experience that separates them from other alternative bands. Dana Ives regularly performs in New Orleans and has several festivals and US tours on their list of accomplishments. Their August 2022 record, So Happy It’s Time, marks a higher level of aggression and rhythm not heard in full form on their previous work. SHE MIGHT BE A BEAST Ready or not, it’s time to unleash the beast. The New Orleans power trio fuses the styles of grunge, punk, and metal to create the Neogrunge sound (with a dash of NOLA spice). King. He would go on to issue a string of critically-acclaimed blues,blues-rock albums, and experimental fusion-tinged albums. In the ensuing years, Duarte wouldalso maintain an in-demand touring schedule both as a solo artist and as a sideman.Throughout it all, fans have hungered for the ferocious blues stylist to dig into some Texas blueswith his own unmistakable magic. For his 15th album, his first since 2014, he does just that: TheAustin, Texas blues guitar slinger teems up with Texas Sugar Strat Magik producer-guitaristDennis Herring for the first time in 22 years. The resulting album, the gritty and sexy Ain'tGiving Up, out September 2022 on Mascot Records, isn't a calculated return to roots affair,though. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he picked up his first guitar and learned every cover he could think of before beginning to release his own music in 2021. Jared applied that same discipline to his self-promotion, which led to his first official single, Superhero, experiencing success with over 2 million streams to date. In 2023, Jared graduated BerkleeNYC with a masters degree in songwriting and production, and released Flatline, garnering more viral attention, in his final month of school. “I could not be alive alone,” a longtime family friend says with a smile. “None of us could be alive alone.”Within the quiet, cascading corners of Pittsburgh lies a community – nothing short of one large family – that spans zip codes, histories, occupations, and generations, always tumbling inwardly into itself, propped up by steadfast pillars of conviction toward spiritual and emotional mutual aid. The kind of earnest community scaffolding that gets bandied about, wielded as conjecture, particularly in an age of increasing fracture through digital sublimation, is alive and quite well within the universe surrounding Merce Lemon.When asked how the city has inspired her creative practice, she responds with a characteristic joke wrapped in an earthen warmth – “There are big hills, three rivers, and more bridges than anywhere in the whole world.” Growing up in a family of art and music in a city with a small, but vigorously supportive scene, Merce has been going to shows here her whole life, even playing them with the “grown up” friends of her parents – as recently as a few years ago, her band was comprised of her own father and his peers in the Pittsburgh music community.Merce took a step back in 2020, after releasing her last album Moonth, to reassess during an era of anxiety and lockdown – even the reliably nourishing exercise of releasing and playing music felt precarious. “I was grappling with what kind of relationship I wanted with music in my life. It was just something I’d always done, and I didn’t want to lose the magic of that – but I was just having less fun.” In this time of restless confusion, she turned her gaze inwardly, down to the roots – figuratively and literally.“I got dirty and slept outside most of the summer. I learned a lot about plants and farming, just writing for myself, and in that time I just slowly accumulated songs.” A never-ending creative hunger, supported by the community framework she’d always been able to depend on, had been newly fertilized by the wide-eyed inspiration that came from plunging her hands into both the earth’s soil and her own. Rooting around for an answer, finding and turning in her palms what had been buried there all along – from this rediscovery, imbued with the vitality of earth’s green magic, Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild sprouted forth.The album emerges, enveloped in propulsive guitars and saccharine-sweet songs of blackbirds and blueberries, from the dead-calm center of a pastoral frenzy in a manner that one could argue as erratic, reckless — a grave misunderstanding, as Merce is just as aware of where she’s being pulled from as she is curious about where to go next. Her sound is built from a reverence and gratitude for the natural world, how paying respect to it charts a clearer path through the choppy waters of the heart. “I can see your relentlessness / in the muddy puddles where retting is / shattering the splintered stalks / where golden braids pour into drops.”They are songs of belonging just as much as they are songs of longing – ”Say I was a lonely gust of wind / could I redirect them,” she muses in “Crow”, forgoing the voyeur in all of our hearts, hoping only to help direct the “murderous flock” as they help direct her. In this music, romantic and familial love rips into and out of itself, barely registering as disparate feelings in a flurry of reckoning. Do not make the mistake of ascribing a gentle nature to these songs, nor Merce herself. There is a fierceness, a persistence in this vulnerability, that is matched in droves by the wildness of her band. In “Backyard Lover,” the strength of reconciling the quiet conflict of a desire for closeness and solitude in equal parts – “I don’t get out much / is being swallowed by a room supposed to feel this way? / Maybe i’ll come out / babe” – is complemented with the gritted promise of “Foolish and Fast” to plow through mountain highways in search of a respite from heartache — “And my love just passing through you / foolish and fast.” For Merce, the only certainty is an endless questioning, roaring straight past a dogwood, never missing the opportunity to watch a petal fluttering to the ground in the rear view.There is an oaken warmth in Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild that makes it easy to love – once wild, still free, honest and familiar. Its genesis is timeless, its restlessness eternal – it is one cohesive yet unanswered question built around, and dependent upon, the life-giving force of nature that came before Merce. The album’s closing track also inspires its title – a lonely ballad of forlorn projection into an unknown future, forever protected by the comforting green of Pittsburgh’s hills, rivers, bridges, and homes: “Old man howling / laughing his teeth out / with the dogs down the hill. And a tree fell / I smell the wood / and the bark is coming off in sheets / I write my words down on it. And honestly / the thoughts of a husband / weighing on me.”

With a sound reminiscent of Big Thief, Haley Heynderickx, and Joni Mitchell, her music is grounded in lyric-forward storytelling wrapped in acoustic guitars — tender, honest, and unhurried. Her debut album, Splinters and Other Keepsakes, is a collection of transformations: coping with loss, shedding old identities, and choosing to stay gentle. Written throughout her first two years of adulthood, it draws from various influences to form a convergence of dream pop, indie rock, and acoustic folk ballads. Josiah Day’s music bridges the gap between folky indie rock artists such as Alex G, Mj Lenderman and the Backseat Lovers, and harder rock inspirations such as Sonic Youth, and Nirvana. He is from Houston, Texas and now lives in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has played at Carrollton Station, Gasa Gasa, and Maple Studio Productions, a local DIY basement venue where he and his friends organize shows.
