BODYTRAFFIC Unplugged

Born and raised in Honolulu, Noel Okimoto has been playing professionally since the age of ten. Noel’s primary instrument is the drum set, but is also an accomplished orchestral percussionist, vibraphonist, composer and clinician. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Noel has played in Hawaiʻi, the mainland USA, and internationally with Freddie Hubbard, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson, Richie Cole, Bill Watrous, Ernie Watts, Bud Shank, Barney Kessel, Lew Tabackin, Sadao Watanabe, Wynton Marsalis, Ronnie Cuber, Makoto Ozone, Jeff Richman, Larry Coryell, Nestor Torres, Gene Harris, Take 6, David Benoit, Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, Steve Allen, Natalie Cole, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Dionne Warwick, and Jake Shimabukuro, among others. He was also a member of the Gabe Baltazar Group for five years. He retired as the percussion section leader of the historic Royal Hawaiian Band after many years of service to the City &amp; County of Honolulu.&nbsp;Okimoto recorded an award-winning jazz CD in 2004, entitled ‘Ohana, that received a 4-Star review in Downbeat magazine and positive reviews in other national and international publications.

A member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Laughing Foxʻs work as both a visual and performance artist is varied and tied together by the traditional teachings of the Anishinaabe people, which is respectfully incorporated into his work. Special guest appearance by pianist Monica Chung. This event is at Hale Lihue on Rice Street.&nbsp;Laughing Fox will be visiting Kauaʻi for a week-long Residency where he will perform for and interact with students all across Kauaʻi. He will visit Kalaheo Elementary, Namahana School, Kapaʻa Middle School, Island School, Eleʻele Elementary, and many more! This is the first time Kauaʻi Concert Association is bringing in an artist for a week-long Residency to provide free Outreach Education Services to Kauaʻi schools. A Night of Chamber Music with Monica Chung & Ensemble Henrietta

A world-class saxophonist, flutist, composer and educator, Don Braden’s jazz career has spanned over 40 years. He has toured the world with jazz greats Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock and the Hancock Institute, and many others, and has performed in venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall, Saturday Night Live, Harvard University (where he studied Engineering as an undergrad), and countless jazz festivals and clubs. He has played on over 100 CDs as a sideman and has produced 23 as a leader, the most recent being his critically acclaimed Earth Wind and Wonder and the recently released In the Spirit of Herbie Hancock and Chemiatry, co-led with bassist Joris Teepe.Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 20, 1963, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Braden's first exposure to music came from his parents' record collection, and from radio. Although there were no musicians in his family, he showed a strong interest in music early on. At age 13, he started playing tenor sax in middle school band class, and two years later, joined his first professional band — influenced by and performing the music of "contemporary Jazz" groups like The Crusaders. After being introduced to acoustic jazz in high school by band director Ernie Sanders, Braden studied for years with saxophonist Mike Tracy and also attended Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops. He went on to be chosen first chair for the McDonald's All-American High School Jazz and Marching Bands, and to receive a Yamaha Instrument Award (given to an outstanding All-American Band member).After his acceptance to Harvard University in 1981, Braden divided his time between studying engineering and performing at jazz clubs around the Boston/Cambridge area and with the Harvard Jazz Bands. In 1984, he took time off from Harvard to more deeply explore jazz (and some engineering) in the “real world” of New York City. While working part-time as a computer programmer, he landed his first gigs with the Harper Brothers Quintet, with organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and then with legendary vocalist Betty Carter. After touring with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet for over seven months, he recorded with Betty Carter on her Grammy Award-winning album, "Look What I Got" (Verve-Polygram). Following tours in Europe, Japan and the Americas with Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, and many others, Braden became a member of the Freddie Hubbard Quintet from 1989 to 1991, then the Tom Harrell groups from 1993 through 1997. Since then he has worked with the Mingus Big Band, Kenny Barron, J. J. Johnson, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and many others, as well as with his own groups.

Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making.Growing up in New York City, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7, and the next year was accepted into The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program—a full scholarship program for under-represented students—where he lingered to watch student recitals and fell in love with music. He advanced to Juilliard’s elite Pre-College at age 10—with the help of his teacher at the time, Beth Nam, who gave him countless extra lessons without charge—to study with Matti Raekallio, Hung-Kuang Chen, and Ernest Barretta. Clayton practiced on a synthesizer at home until he found an old upright piano on the street that an elementary school had thrown away; that would become his practice piano for the next six years, until the Lang Lang Foundation donated a new piano to him when he was 17.He credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. Aoi Trio won this prestigious first prize in 2018, which made a breathtaking start to their international career. Aoi Trio was founded in 2016 by Kyoko Ogawa (violin), Yu Ito (cello), and Kosuke Akimoto (piano), all of whom graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts and studied at the renowned Chamber Music Academy of Suntory Hall (Tokyo) for 2 years. After winning at ARD competition, they continued studying under Dirk Mommertz (Fauré Quartett) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. Aoi Trio is appearing at more than 20 concerts every year at the major venues not only in Japan but Germany, Italy, France and Czech. Recently they are working 7 years project with Suntory Hall and 3 years resident program with Kioi Hall. Recent highlight includes the collaboration with Sapporo Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s triple concerto and with Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra Casella’s triple concerto. Aoi Trio has released four recordings “Haydn No. 27 and Schubert No. 2” and “Beethoven No. 1 and Mendelssohn No. 2”, “Martinu No. 1 &amp; Dvorak No. 3” and “Schumann No. 1 &amp; Schubert No. 1” which have attracted great critical acclaim. They received the Aoyama Music Award, Nippon Steel Music Award, Hotel Okura Music Award and Music Pen Club Award. “Aoi” refers to the initial letters of their individual family names and is also the name of a flower in Japanese language, which is commonly known as ‘hollylock” in Europe and symbolises “aspiration” or “fruitfulness.”

Pianist Dr. Jonathan Korth is a faculty at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Music Department. He is a prolific concertizer in Bangkok, Beijing, Brussels, London, Shanghai, Seoul, and Tokyo, and also throughout our islands. Jonathan’s deep appreciation and love for chamber music has led to recent partnerships with musicians such as violinists Martin Beaver, Stefan Jackiw, and Robert McDuffie, and cellists Zuill Bailey and Sung-Won Yang. He is the longtime President of the Honolulu Chamber Music Series, and has attracted a diverse international teaching studio from the US and Asia.Dr. Korth joins pianist Monica Chung for a 2-piano concert at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center on Sunday, December 8th, 2024 at 5pm. Some works to be expected on the program are Rachmaninoff Fantasie Tableaux Op.5, and a wild duo piano arrangement of Marc-Andre Hamelinʻs Circus Galop. The program will be accompanied by some surprising backstories on how this program and collaboration came to be.

The Escher String Quartet has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. A former BBC New Generation Artist and recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the quartet has performed at the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall and is a regular guest at Wigmore Hall. In its home town of New York, the ensemble serves as season artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.Beyond the concert hall, the Escher Quartet is proud to announce the creation of a not-for-profit organization, ESQYRE (Escher String Quartet Youth Residency Education). Bon Bon Vivant New Orleans Band Returns to Kauai

Top Prize Winner of the 2018 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Wagner Division, Soprano AMY SHOREMOUNT-OBRA has garnered major attention for her work on the operatic and concert stage, having been hailed by Opera News as having sung a “really outstanding (Donna) Anna, accurate and with exciting thrust, including the best vengeance aria I’ve heard since Carol Vaness’ heyday."&nbsp; Her voice has been described as one that portrays “sensitivity yet full-throated power” (Huffington Post) and that “allies dramatic weight, particularly in the upper register, with virtuoso flexibility... &lt;and with&gt; superb legato….&lt;and&gt; roulades and scales... &lt;that become&gt; truly expressive gestures” (Opera News) while it “thrills with laser-like top notes” (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://BostonClassicalReview.com">BostonClassicalReview.com</a>).​Ms. Shoremount-Obra made her much-anticipated Metropolitan Opera Debut in October 2014 as “First Lady” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, singing all nine performances of the opera, three of which were Sirius XM Satellite Broadcasts. She recently returned to the Met for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons for the revival of the English version of the opera in the same role. In previous seasons at the Met, she has covered the roles of "Donna Anna" in Don Giovanni,&nbsp; "Anna" in Nabucco,&nbsp; “Clotilde” in Norma, “Aksinya” in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and “Queen of the Night” (also in Die Zauberflöte).&nbsp; Ms. Shoremount-Obra’s other recent operatic appearances have included her debut in the title role of “Turandot” with Opera Grand Rapids, her debut in the title role of “Salome” with the Southern Illinois Music Festival, the title role of Daphne (R. She has also won numerous awards from other organizations, including the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation, which she was awarded at her graduation from The Juilliard School and has since been supported with supplemental grants from the same foundation. She is the 2016 winner of the Ursula Springer Award from the Wagner Society of New York and together with pianist Christopher Cooley, the 2019 Second Prize Winner in the Joy In Singing International Art Song Competition. She is a native of New Jersey and holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music (BM, MM) and The Juilliard School (AD). She continues her vocal studies in New York as a student of Diana Soviero. In August 2017, Ms. Shoremount-Obra was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor of Voice at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. Formed in 2016, the Quatuor Agate derives its name from one of the most beautiful chamber music pieces, Johannes Brahms’s Second Sextet, dedicated to his second love, Agathe von Siebold.&nbsp;Seven years later, this fascination with Brahms materialized with the release of their debut album in February 2024, featuring the complete String Quartets under the Appassionato Records label.Agate will perform one night only on Kauai— Sunday, April 7, 2024.
