Oh man has Heavy Cycle Cinema got a Halloween film night prepared for all of you! Two classic Hong Kong horror classics from Shaw Brothers Studios - both directed by Kuei Chih-Hung, the most rebellious and subversive of all the directors at Shaw. Each film will gross you out with their gooey prosthetics and body horrors! Each film will mystify you with their psychedelic images and visual tricks! Each film will potentially scare you from having sex?!? Maybe. First up will be Bewitched (1981), a horror gem that showcases surprisingly detailed rituals of Thai sorcery, and provides a stern warning for everyone to stay away from having casual sex and dabbling in witchcraft. We’ll observe a Hong Kong detective (quietly played by Melvin Wong) as he tries to solve the mystery of why a local man killed his own daughter after returning from a romantic fling in Thailand. The man said that he was possessed due to some mysterious black magic. We shall find out the truth together, folks!Second in line is Kuei Cheh-Hung’s masterpiece, The Boxer’s Omen (1983) - the sequel to Bewitched. We learn far more about the immense forces of sorcery fought between good and bad wizards in Hung’s kaleidoscopic fever dream world of exploitation and mischief. Philip Ko plays a Hong Kong gangster that surprisingly discovers all kinds of ancestral and metaphysical secrets while on a quest to avenge his brother for being brutally attacked by a ruthless boxer. Come join in the fun and lend a hand as we somehow scrape ourselves up off the floor during the end credits!

This is a real grindhouse banger from Joseph Kuo - an indie director notorious for presenting powerful kung fu action on shoestring budgets and assisting in the creation of the Wu Tang Clan mythology. The star of the show, Jack Long, plays an aging kung fu expert that goes on a quest to defeat seven grandmasters across China to prove his dominancy as a martial artist before he retires. Surprises abound as a seemingly simple narrative is twisted up by Kuo to disorient and shock his audience through the unveiling of secret identities and subplots. This is a gem of Taiwanese martial arts cinema and a sublime treat for those of us that love shapes kung fu flicks.

The second installment of Heavy Cycle Cinema should send a clear message that we’re not wasting any time in shepherding a bunch of hopping vampires into your lives. What better way to do it than to showcase the OG Sammo Hung classic, Encounters of the Spooky Kind (1980). Revolutionary in its blend of horror, kung fu, and comedy, Encounters has had a lasting impact on Hong Kong cinema and how taoist iconography and jiangshi vampires could be utilized to elicit thrills, chills, and laughs. Furthermore, its absurd comedic action has long been believed to have strongly influenced another trailblazing horror film, Evil Dead 2. Sammo Hung plays the protagonist “Big Guts” Cheung, a lovable oaf with extraordinary kung fu skills, an adulterous wife, and an evil boss hell bent on destroying him through the use of sorcery. Heavy Cycle Cinema: Encounters of the Spooky Kind

S*GLASSThe electro-acoustic sound collages by S*Glass combine cut-ups, electronic processing, voice, found sound, and chance operations. Non-musical objects are sometimes incorporated (anything from dental floss and aluminum foil to wind-up toys and metal lunch box, sometimes cabbage). Self-shot video is screened during sets, which is mostly textures made with multiple layers that slowly wobble out of sync, jump cuts, and a smattering of primitive animation. The overall effect is one of surreal disorientation.S*Glass is a founder of Bren’t Lewiis Ensemble (a large non-musical music group begun in the early 1980s), and Glands of External Secretion (a duo with rock musician Barbara Manning since the early ’90s). From the late ’80s until 2004, he was the main driver behind Bananafish. Since 2017, he’s  performed as a solo artist and completed U.S. tours of the West Coast, New England, part of the South and Midwest, England and Scotland, a handful of places in Canada. This past October he toured Australia and New Zealand for three weeks; coming up in April is 10 days in the Southwest.He’s released music and sound on his label Butte County Free Music Society, and has also collaborated with an international array of others such as Dylan Nyoukis (Scotland) Anla Courtis of Reynols (Argentina), Noel Meek (New Zealand), Bryan Day (US), Andrew Zukerman (Canada), Cody Brant (US), and Orchid Spangiafora (US). This is an archived recording of the entire show, originally broadcast on Jan 18 2024SAILOR BEWARELara Allen’s solo work under the name Sailor Beware combines sound collage, spoken word, and vaudeville in a kaleidoscopic portrayal of her experiences in Cincinnati public schools, a troubled teen industry cult, and children’s mental hospital.She was in Caroliner for a while, way back when, and also fronted Heavenly Ten Stems, who specialized in covers of Asian pop and rock tunes (the sort later popularized by labels such as Sublime Frequencies, et al.), has appeared on an album by Secret Chiefs 3, and was the off-the-hook screeching front-person of legendary Ohio psycho-rock juggernaut Manwich. Her artwork was on the cover of Bananafish #12 and she was interviewed in #17. Her playing has the ability to combine feverish smacks of rock riffs with focused lyricism and loose repetition. Her live show is a ride - a sermon in the House of Guitar - with brief evocations of The Velvet Underground, Henry Flynt, and Tetuzi Akiyama’s Don’t Forget To Boogie. Whilst Emily often utilizes learned scales, popularly heard-before chords and ideas from her heroes, (you might even hear someone's infamous riff in the middle of her set), her music comes out sounding like a novel, glowing, ranting, loving rock 'n' roll poem. The Washington Post explained her set opening for Mdou Moctar as "raucous solo instrumentals [that] ranged through 20th-century guitar history from raga-rock string-bending to a Chuck Berry-style vamp that expanded into a wall of sound.”Fall of 2023 saw Emily's second solo release, If I Am Misery Then Give Me Company, on the Petty Bunco label, as well as a split LP with Bill Nace on Open Mouth Records. Emily maintains a steady touring schedule, often with her partner Richie Charles accompanying her on electric organ and sometimes performing in collaborative duos (Bill Nace, Bill Orcutt, Anne Ishii). Most Sinking Body full length releases came out in the 90s, followed by a smattering of songs released on various compilations. The music has been described as "sounds, including occasional rhythmic moments and other". Synthesizers and electricity are what keeps things moving along. You can stand up or sit down and still get your fill. Don't forget how to get home after the gig. Burke is also a visual artist, whose work has appeared on numerous album covers, posters and shirts.
