Comedy Open Mic

Obscure Notation, a New England–based jazz‑blues fusion group. We blend classic repertoire with original compositions, drawing inspiration from artists of the 1960s through the 1990s, including ECM musicians, jazz innovators, and blues legends. Our sound is shaped by decades of collective experience, and we enjoy moving fluidly between atmospheric fusion, straight‑ahead jazz, and soulful blues. The ensemble is made up of seasoned musicians with backgrounds in music education, composition, and performance, including members trained at Berklee College of Music, where they studied with Gary Burton, Alan Dawson, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, and other notable artists.

Songwriter Sessions at Rapscallion bring the spirit of Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe to Lawrence: an intimate, in-the-round evening where talented songwriters trade songs, share the stories behind them, and invite the audience inside the creative process.Rather than a typical concert, these sessions spotlight the writers themselves—original lyrics, unexpected collaborations, unfinished ideas, and the real-life moments that inspired each song. Artists take turns performing, listening, laughing, and responding to one another in a relaxed, close-up setting.Grab a beer, settle in, and experience songs the way they begin: honest, personal, and just a few feet away.About JJ Slater&nbsp;There’s a warm analog feel throughout, and Slater has a fondness for choogling guitars and soft-spoken vocals — he often sings in a murmur, and even when he projects his voice, it’s smooth and unforced.&nbsp; Usually when folks describe JJ Slater’s music, words relate back to nature, the outdoors, the warm sun and the cool breeze.Based in New England, he has toured much of the US, playing festivals, basements, and club gigs, at times opening for artists like Kat Wright, NRBQ, Johnny A, and David Wax Museum. In 2022, he completed a residency at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, where he wrote his new record “The Silver Key”. It was recorded with a Mass Cultural Council grant in 2023, released at the end of 2024, and you’ll find him touring and playing the full record in 2025. He’ll also be touring with his Americana-Blues road-dog project Signature Dish, co-fronting the band with partner Lexi Weege and lending his songs to a dynamic, soul-journey set.In between rock bands, funk jams, and jazz brunches, JJ’s guitar playing is always centered and relentlessly rhythmic, with lead work that quotes both gutsy blues and celestial jazz. His songwriting is playful, with an ability to write a catchy hook and chorus, but take you down a minute-long rabbit hole with a wink and a grin- all with a soft, smoky approach to singing that recalls a burn ride with an old friend.About Nicole BurkeNicole Burke is a soprano, songwriter, and voice educator based in Lowell, Massachusetts. She holds a Bachelor of Music from McGill University and a Master of Music from the Royal College of Music. While in England, she performed at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in 2019. Her operatic credits include Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, Dalinda in Ariodante, Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, and Despina in Così fan tutte. Equally at home in musical theatre, she has portrayed roles such as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago, Marge in The Bridges of Madison County, and Mrs. Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol. Beyond the stage, Nicole is an independent singer-songwriter whose original music is available on all streaming platforms. Known for her clear, expressive soprano and emotionally honest lyricism, she writes songs that explore moments of transition, including heartbreak, growth, and experiences that do not always resolve neatly. After years in the classical world, she stepped into her own artistry, crafting a sound that is raw, reflective, and deeply human. Nicole is currently on faculty at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and is the founder of Nicole Burke Voice Studio in Dunstable, MA. She works with university and private students throughout the Greater Boston area and beyond, many of whom have gone on to perform leading roles in productions including Into the Woods, Beetlejuice, Mean Girls, Les Misérables, The Wizard of Oz, Matilda, Seussical, and Legally Blonde.About Patrick PattersonPatrick Patterson is a versatile composer, performer, and producer renowned for his expertise in alternative rock, hard rock, and heavy metal music. Armed with a penchant for improvisation, he delivers captivating live performances that blend melodic metal with dynamic spontaneity.Beyond his prowess as a performer, Patrick is best known for his audio production work from the Western Colorado Rockies to the New England hardcore/metal scene.About Russell TurnquistRussell Turnquist is the founder of the Rusted Bucket Band, a rock n roll unit based out of Arlington, MA. Drawing upon folk, classic rock, and the “alt country/Americana rock” inspirations, they have crafted their own sound and performance style. Since 2013, they have played shows throughout New England and graced many stages of the preeminent music clubs in the greater Boston area. Their debut full length album is slotted for a release at Atwood’s Tavern on Thursday, May 2nd. The record is co-produced by Russell Turnquist and Dave Westner (Woolly Mammoth Sound) and is peppered with many special guest contributions from east coast all star musicians, and a couple from the west coast too. If you are a fan of Wilco, Tom Petty, The Band, or any of the iterations born from that type of creative space, you’ll be pleased by the tradition and evolution carried on by The Rusted Bucket Band.

Sweet Petunia is an alt-folk duo blending old time and traditional folk with a punk DIY spirit. They are known for their silk and grit harmonies and double banjo action. Their debut “Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown” is available now on Righteous Babe Records.Mairead Guy (they/them) and Maddy Simpson (she/her) crossed paths while attending Berklee College of Music in 2018. When they joined their school's 21st Century String Band ensemble, their classmates were convinced the duo must be related because their voices interwove so naturally. But it wasn't until a fateful day during a rehearsal delay that, with the unexpected free time, Guy and Simpson struck up a conversation and realized they shared a love for Simon &amp; Garfunkel and Gillian Welch &amp; Dave Rawlings. After meeting up for casual jam sessions a couple of times, Simpson and Guy formed their own project, Sweet Petunia.Since then, they have been nominated twice by the Boston Music Awards for Best Folk Act and have performed at music festivals including In Between Days and Nice, a Fest.Sweet Petunia is now introducing themselves to a wider audience with their debut LP, Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown, released on March 13th via Righteous Babe Records. She has been&nbsp;nominated for two Boston Music Awards, as well as receiving the City of Boston's Extraordinary Women Award in 2023 and Allston Village Main Street's Artist of the Year in 2025 for her contributions to music and community. Daniel Van Kirk is a stand-up comedian whose comedy album “Thanks Diane” debuted at #1 on Apple Music and in 2024 released his comedy special, “Rose Gold”. Daniel has been named a “Comic To Watch” by Comedy Central and you may know him from his characters and performances on Bob’s Burgers (FOX), Ballard (Amazon Prime), The Morning Show (Apple TV+), and the lead in the feature film, Wine Club (Amazon Prime). Daniel can also be heard every week on the hit comedy podcasts, "Pen Pals" and "Dumb People Town"; and has performed at the top festivals in North America, including The Moontower Comedy Festival, 10,000 Laughs Comedy Festival, JFL 42, and JFL Montreal.

Captains of Industry are a Boston-based indie rock band rooted in classic American rock and roll but unafraid to push beyond it, drawing inspiration from bands such as Tom Petty, Gin Blossoms, Dawes, and My Morning Jacket. The band is made up of vocalist/guitarist Daniel Rodriguez, vocalist/bassist Aaron Kammerer, vocalist/guitarist Jason Fidler, and drummer Drew Spangler. Each member had spent years playing in various projects across the Boston and New England music scenes before coming together in the summer of 2019. After releasing their debut EP So Sweet in December 2021, the band quickly built a reputation as a formidable live act, playing sold-out shows at venues including The Burren, The Bebop, The Middle East, and The Jungle Community Club. The seeds of The Rusted Bucket Band came to existence in the Summer of 2012 when two guys wanted to lose some weight and met up at a place that would help them shed some baggage. Sitting in "The Elvis Room" during a music session group at Right Turn, Russ and Greg had their first musical interaction. Later that afternoon discussions of jamming ensued, and by the winter, a trio gig was performed at the 1369 Coffeehouse 20th Anniversary party in Cambridge, MA. By the summer, The Rusted Bucket Band had blossomed into a five piece unit,&nbsp;a few festival gigs were part of the story, as well as regular bar gigs in the Boston area.&nbsp; The Rusted Bucket Band has played the main stage at festivals in NH, headlined or co-billed many gigs locally at places such as The Middle East Upstairs, The Plough &amp; Stars, Bull McCabe's, The Burren, The Lizard Lounge, The Midway Cafe, The Lily Pad, Club Bohemia, Sallie O'Briens, Ralph's Rock Diner and Church (to name a few). We've also recorded&nbsp;our first full length album (due out Spring of 2019)&nbsp;working with Dave Westner at Woolly Mammoth Sound, and also Andy Plaisted at Electric Andyland. Obscure Notation, a New England–based jazz‑blues fusion group. We blend classic repertoire with original compositions, drawing inspiration from artists of the 1960s through the 1990s, including ECM musicians, jazz innovators, and blues legends. Our sound is shaped by decades of collective experience, and we enjoy moving fluidly between atmospheric fusion, straight‑ahead jazz, and soulful blues. The ensemble is made up of seasoned musicians with backgrounds in music education, composition, and performance, including members trained at Berklee College of Music, where they studied with Gary Burton, Alan Dawson, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, and other notable artists.

The Mushroom Cloud is a five-piece rock band from Connecticut that has been creating powerful original music and putting on electrifying shows around the Northeast since 2012. Brothers Paul and Russ Harris form the core of the group, and are joined by Matt Cuddy, Ryan Berry, and Christian Mariano to produce a unique and cohesive blend of rock, jam, and synth-heavy riffs. Always keeping their audiences dancing, they fluidly move through genres and aren’t afraid to take chances to deliver the most exciting live performances possible. Their unique energy resonates deep in the soul, capturing fans of a wide variety, and although The Mushroom Cloud has undergone several personnel changes throughout the years, the current lineup is the best iteration yet, ultimately leading to the pinnacle of their new sound. Upcoming shows include: Exvangelicals and Ovary Acting. Jen Howell is a comedian with a hopeful perspective on becoming a better human. She hopes to help others find amusement in embracing their inner weirdo. When Jen is not on stage you can find her leading music-heavy yoga classes and retreats all over planet earth. She shares her home in Boston, MA with two rescue dogs that suffer from mental illness.

PBJ x Rapscallion PRESENT: Geoff Abrahamand David Hull &amp; The Dirty AngelsDue to David Hull's love of music he was drafted into The Buddy Miles Band at the age of 18 and began touring the world, recording four of Buddy’s albums, including his Gold classic LP, "Them Changes". He’s also a founding member of the original Joe Perry Project - recording "Let the Music Do the Talking" and "I've Got the Rock &amp; Rolls Again" - both widely acknowledged as groundbreaking Classic Hard Rock albums. He’s gone on to continue collaborating on many recordings and shows with Joe over the years. He was later invited to play bass with Aerosmith on four world tours when founding bassist Tom Hamilton was temporarily out of commission.In the Summer of 2025, David Hull and the Dirty Angels toured with The Joe Perry Project, performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the country, and receiving standing ovations literally every time they hit the stage. David is co-founder of the band Farrenheit. He has also recorded and toured with Joe Cocker, Pete Droge, Ted Nugent, and the James Montgomery Band, to name a few. When David’s not on stage, he’s usually in the studio writing and producing.Guitarist PETE CASSANI has spent the last 25+ years fronting his original band The Peasants. Known for their unpredictable and electrifying live shows, the band even caught the attention of rock royalty, with Slash of Guns N' Roses famously jumping on stage during one of their sets. Singer/songwriter Frank Morey has never been accused of having a sweet, pretty, angelic sort of voice. The Lowell, MA, native is known for a rough, rugged, throaty style of singing, and his voice is perfect for his very earthy, blues-minded folk-rock and roots rock -- Morey's expressive vocals are as gritty as they are soulful. The New Englander, who plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, brings a variety of influences to the table. He has often been compared to early <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="name-link" href="https://www.allmusic.com/artist/tom-waits-mn0000615119">Tom Waits</a>, and his other influences range from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="name-link" href="https://www.allmusic.com/artist/bob-dylan-mn0000066915">Bob Dylan</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="name-link" href="https://www.allmusic.com/artist/leonard-cohen-mn0000071209">Leonard Cohen</a> to the late Chicago blues giant <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="name-link" href="https://www.allmusic.com/artist/howlin-wolf-mn0000276085">Howlin' Wolf</a>. Boston-based acoustic group Trusting Fate is bolstered by a genuine passion for creating imaginative, unexpected music. The group’s debut release Down to the Basics features 12 original tunes that combine elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, roots and blues into a fresh, powerful sound. Trusting Fate spin playful melodies and blend rich three-part harmonies with crisp lyrics. The band’s songs are marked by inventive arrangements that explore luxurious instrumental and vocal layers. Trusting Fate’s straightforward songwriting style and ability to deliver intimate, engaging performances reveal all three members have been inspired by legendary singers, instrumentalists and storytellers such as Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Tom Waits, The Jayhawks and Richard Thompson. &nbsp; The concept of Trusting Fate first emerged in 2007 when Therkelsen, O’Brien and Doyle were singing together in a nine-piece R&amp;B dance outfit, Red Box Panic and felt driven to experiment with different acoustic instrumentation, the finer points of dynamics and with musical genres that could not be executed by a large rock ensemble. The three broke off and began to put their own twist on classic rock covers, inserting signature Americana and bluegrass rhythmic and melodic flavors using mandolin, fiddle and keyboards and combining them with improvisational, bluesy vocal lines and heartfelt, narrative lyrics. They became Trusting Fate in 2009 and have since played at favorite hometown venues throughout the Northeastern United States, including Java Room, &nbsp;The Tavern in Groton and and Main Street Café in Concord. &nbsp; The group has been featured on local radio and television programs. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Down to Basics is currently available via Spotify&nbsp;

Jake McKelvie has traveled the DIY touring circuit in the US and UK for over a decade, carving out a niche for himself as a songwriter and performer. Known for his off-kilter and whimsical "stream of self-consciousness" lyricism and charming stage demeanor, he keeps audiences engaged both as a solo performer or with his newly minted backing band, “the New Old Band". He released his latest LP "A New Kind of Hat" in 2024 and has been touring in support of that since.

Hailed for her angelic voice and haunting compositions, Molly Pinto Madigan won first place in WUMB's Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest and was named "Artist of the Year" at Salem State University, her alma mater.&nbsp; Since her debut as the lead singer for the teen bluegrass band Jaded Mandolin, Madigan has submerged herself in the dark, luscious world of ballads, drawn to their magic, and her original songs echo with the whisperings of the American and European traditional music. Madigan has performed extensively around the Boston area at venues like Club Passim, The Boston Celtic Music Festival, First Night Boston, Cantab Lounge, notloB Parlor Concerts, Campfire Festival, The Lizard Lounge, and The Bull Run, sharing the stage with some big names in folk music, including Claire Lynch, Scott Alarik, Bridget Fitzgerald (of Cherish the Ladies), Robbie O'Connell (of The Clancy Brothers), Susan Cattaneo,&nbsp;Tracy Grammer, and John Carter Cash. Molly has been featured on WUMB's Local Folk, WATD's Almost Famous, as well as WBRS's Off the Beaten Path.&nbsp; She recently won first place in the Family Folk Chorale Songwriting Contest, and was awarded a prestigious Passim Iguana Music Fund for her album, "Wildwood Bride."Forged in 2010 and hailing from Lowell, Massachusetts. Old Rochelle is a creative and original and rock-and-roll band. Their sound has been described as everything from "Ramshackle Springsteen Roots-Rock" to "Zydeco-washed Americana", "Cajun-Pop", Cosmic Country, "Psychedelic Shoegaze", and even "Calvary Rock". David Gabriel Coscia (aka Bucky Fereke) delivers bright melodies, moving lyrics, and electrifying guitar solos. His vocals have been described as "a booming, world-weary baritone filled with wisdom and regret".
