- Carsie Blanton -Carsie Blanton is a songwriter with hooks, chutzpah, and revolutionary optimism. A radical folk artist in the tradition of Woody Guthrie, her infectious melodies and lyrical wit keep listeners rapt while she conjures spirits of vaudeville, campfire singalongs, and punk rock. Blanton and her road-tested band deploy humor, camaraderie, and considerable musical muscle to enroll each audience in a rare vision of hope and solidarity. In addition to writing and performing music, Carsie works as a political organizer and activist. In fall of 2025, she participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a direct action to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza by sailboat. In early October, after a month at sea, she was imprisoned in Israel for five days along with hundreds of her comrades. Soon after, Blanton released The Little Flame, a song of solidarity covered widely on social media during her detention. The Little Flame features background vocals from Irish band Ye Vagabonds and Carsie’s Palestinian/New Zealander prison-mate Rana Hamida, and appears on her latest album, The Red Album Vol II. After two decades spent on the road, Blanton has amassed a dedicated fan base and a small menagerie of viral hits, and regularly sells out mid-size venues across the U.S. and Europe. 2026 will find her touring heavily with her own band and in collaboration with Canadian folk-punk rabblerousers The Burning Hell, as well as continuing her organizing work with Artists Against Apartheid and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.- The Burning Hell -The Burning Hell is the musical project of songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalist Ariel Sharratt. Their narrative-driven songs are packed with literary, historical, and pop-cultural subjects, incorporating a frequent fixation on apocalypse and ruin into work that celebrates participation in a surprising, wry, and even occasionally beautiful world. Based in the woods of Prince Edward Island, Canada, The Burning Hell emphasizes connection and commitment to the political power of sharing music.

Yoni Wolf was at war with himself. As he reached middle age, he was beset by questions that had plagued him for years. Why was life so difficult and lonely? When would the happy part of him take the steering wheel? Far from wallowing, he leaned into the dark and the light, asking how and when real change was possible. Of course, transformation wasn’t a foreign concept to WHY?, the mercurial project that’s housed much of Wolf’s neuroses and restless creativity since the late ‘90s. This time, the two sides of a man became the basis for a new album split in half, at times diametrically opposed. WHY?’s ninth album, Oh Golly / Yes Lord, airs all of Wolf’s baggage while asking how a person resolves their different selves. “The album is not a flattering look at my life, but that’s not the point,” Wolf asserts. “This is warts-and-all stuff. I’m always striving for honesty in WHY?, but Oh Golly / Yes Lord is particularly revealing.” The dual phrases in the album derive from Wolf’s father–an aggrieved sigh vs. harmonious acceptance, or, as Wolf puts it, “bad attitude vs. good gratitude.” “It’s my own way of categorizing my mindset,” he continues. Though Wolf wrangles with his own sense of middle-aged desperation and anxious attachment throughout the album, he’s also traversing waters many of us have waded into amidst the often-baffling landscape of online dating, social media, and all the other ways our interactions are filtered through the digital world. WHY? has always been known for an intense connection with its listeners; Oh Golly / Yes Lord is WHY? making an album about the struggle to connect. After a long five-year break following 2019’s AOKOHIO, Wolf entered a new creative burst as we tumbled into the mid-’20s. Much of Oh Golly / Yes Lord is contemporary with or directly follows from 2024’s The Well I Fell Into, a strikingly introspective account of a brutal breakup. On that album, Wolf eschewed bitterness for dismantling his own faults and foibles. Oh Golly / Yes Lord picks up where it left off, but is an even more viscerally honest document, even by the standards of WHY?’s trademark vulnerability. Across the LP, Wolf channels both embarrassing and hopeful experiences into a tapestry of autofiction vignettes, full of poignance and self-deprecating wryness alike. “If the last one was really informed by that breakup, this one is informed by the years afterwards,” Wolf describes. “Trying to date again, living on the internet, this pathetic, solitary life.” Oh Golly / Yes Lord is not the first WHY? album to arrive with conceptual framework. WHY? has been an indie band, and it has been a solo project. It has been rap and folk–and a fusion of the two. Their Golden Tickets EP featured songs inspired by and dedicated to fans, while AOKOHIO was part musical collage, part visual project. Throughout his career, Wolf has pushed the boundaries of what WHY? can be, all along building a loyal fanbase drawn to his raw, confessional lyricism. Though left turns don’t necessarily exist in a project known for experimentation, Oh Golly / Yes Lord situates itself as quintessentially WHY? amidst all the zigs and zags across the decades. In the lineage of Oaklandazulasylum, Alopecia, and Mumps, Etc., Oh Golly / Yes Lord finds Wolf rapping his way through the gnarliest corners of his psyche, and the moments of yearning and healing that answer them. By Wolf’s estimation, WHY?’s catalogue almost works in pairs. After the lush, band-driven The Well I Fell Into, he returned to a solo practice, seeking clarity in the unvarnished, close-to-the-bone arrangements of Oh Golly / Yes Lord. It mirrored the album’s themes, a process and sound as intimate as the album’s themes: Wolf alone, trying to figure himself out with little to hide behind and few people to lean on. “This is me being me in real time,” he says. Eventually, Wolf welcomed a few carefully chosen contributors, including his brother and longtime WHY? consigliere Josiah and producer Andrew Broder, each co-writing a track for the Oh Golly side. And after years of mutual admiration, Wolf ended up hanging in the studio with Nate Mercereau (André 3000, The Weeknd). Trading ideas and sharing recent work blossomed into an unexpected and extensive collaboration unprecedented in WHY?’s history. As Wolf aimed to locate the minimal sound he heard in his head, Mercereau worked on nearly all of the Oh Golly half, adding guitar arrangements, synths, and more that helped shape the final aesthetic of the album. Oh Golly / Yes Lord opens with “Sin Lite,” an overture of sorts. Wolf imagines a clean slate, wiping away all the traumas we carry through the years, while the song whiplashes between passages: Wolf ghostly and AutoTuned over dark ambience, singing over rippling acoustics, then rapping over stuttering beats. The dichotomies don’t simply exist in the two halves of the album, but within individual songs, hard cuts representing the internal back-and-forth of Wolf’s mind. Songs break down, then bloom. “Hare” is a sinuous track seeking salvation, Wolf effortlessly gliding from an R&B hook to a sing-speak outro. “Pretend So Real” unpacks relationship patterns and getting a little too into somebody a little too soon; on the Yes Lord side, the hazy hip-hop of “Story Of My Life” answers it by dissecting the fairytales of love ingrained in us from a young age. By the end, in closer “In Spirit,” Wolf’s voice is ragged over plinking piano and guitar, world-weary but manifesting a happy ending by way of a healthier life. Sometimes the resolution is realizing there is no resolution. Any given day, our balance might seesaw between the positive and the negative. If Oh Golly / Yes Lord has any answers, it’s in trying to live with both halves vying for control. If all of the implausible musical contrasts of WHY? can thrive alongside each other, after all, why can’t a person reconcile their disparate ways of thinking while still remaining open to growth? Or as Wolf considers it: Even the bad is OK sometimes, you just have to let it out.“I just have to put it into song, for people to hear where I’m at and to communicate with the ones who can relate,” Wolf concludes. “I do think music helps in this life. That’s why we have it.”

WHY?

Originally from the green rolling hills of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Maya de Vitry is a Nashville-based fiddler-turned-songwriter with a voice that glides effortlessly between tenderness and strength. Her earliest years in the music industry are represented by the 4 full-length albums and 2 EPs with roots-Americana trio The Stray Birds, with whom she toured year-round for 7 years throughout USA, Canada, and Europe. After this formative chapter, she launched her solo career with her 2019 album Adaptations, earning praise from Rolling Stone Country, NPR Music, and No Depression. Since then, she has released three more full-length albums—How to Break a Fall(2020),Violet Light(2022), and The Only Moment(2024); an EP, Infinite(2023); and multiple singles, all of which are testaments to her personal reinvention and creative growth. Energized by the spontaneity of live performance and a revelatory pursuit of truth in her lyric writing, Maya de Vitry returns with her fifth full-length album, All My Faith. Prioritizing presence and grit over studio polish, she sounds joyously at home in the alt-country and indie-folk realms. Recorded and mixed by5-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Sean Sullivan and self-produced by de Vitry, All My Faith is a buoyant gathering of songs brought to life by a cast of her closest confidantes and collaborators. All My Faith will be released on de Vitry’s own Mad Maker Studio label on July 24,2026. “I’d like my music to feel like you are invited into a lush living forest or into a remote river canyon where suddenly you are stripped of not only modern conveniences but also modern distractions. Where you can feel the essence of your own humanity and those around you. Where suddenly a stranger’s story becomes interesting, or where you might choose teamwork and problem-solving and creativity over dogma. Where reciprocity and care start to feel more natural than just about anything else,” she reflects. From canyons to kitchens, from cold lakes to highway truck stops, the songs form a vibrant collage of joy, sorrow, and gut-wrenching honesty. Whether spinning an inspirational tale about hungover bachelorettes at the Nashville airport or exploring the prison of our own adaptations, de Vitry brings a grounded confidence and quiet charisma rooted in her belief in the power of song to change us.

Since his 2019 debut, Emerson has made his contemporary mark on the tradition of American songwriting. His newest and fourth full-length album, Blue Stars, with longtime label La Honda Records, visits all of the influences and moods of his previous releases. After his first album, Fried Chicken & Evil Women, Emerson built a reputation for live music, finding his grass roots audience night after night. The loyalty among his audience can be attributed to his songwriting, and the innate gift of experienced lyrics. His self-titled 2021 release, as well as The Golden Crystal Kingdom in 2023, further cemented that foundation, drawing praise from the producers he worked with on each of those records, Rodney Crowell, and Shooter Jennings, respectively. With his fourth album, Blue Stars, Vincent brings together the distinct sound from all three of his previous releases. Produced by Patrick Lyons and recorded at Gnome Studios in Nashville, TN, the record benefits from Lyons' deeply intuitive approach, having been close friends with Vincent for many years. For Emerson, it was important to capture the sound from the road as closely as possible, enlisting his touring Red Horse Band to play on the album. "I've known Patrick for years and going into the studio with him felt like a big family kind of thing with my band." Blue Stars features 13 original songs and is a testament to his songwriting prowess. Having dabbled across country, folk, and Americana music with his first three records, Emerson brings all three of those genres together with his latest release. Lyrically, these songs are rooted in his upbringing in East Texas, life on the road, and his deep family ties to Louisiana - three landscapes that continue to shape his perspective and inform his writing. "I was definitely thinking a lot about my childhood in Texas and the trips to Louisiana to visit my mother's family there. A lot of the music I love comes from those areas, and I think it's important to have a sense of pride in where you come from." But sonically, Blue Stars reaches wider. It brings together the hard country sound of his early work, the stripped down intimacy of his self-titled record, and the bold rock n' roll of The Golden Crystal Kingdom. The result is a record that offers something for every listener who has followed his journey - while also serving as a perfect entry point for those just discovering his music.

With a career rooted in grit, soul, and over 15 years of relentless touring, Whitey Morgan has long stood as one of the fiercest torchbearers of outlaw country. Hailing from Flint, Michigan, Morgan has released six acclaimed studio albums, a powerful live record, and earned a reputation as a relentless road warrior—averaging more than 125 shows per year. As Rolling Stone put it, he’s a “Waylon Jennings acolyte... a modern-day outlaw [with a] hard-hitting blue-collar brand of music,” while NPR praised him for staying true to the lineage of legends like Jennings, Merle Haggard, and David Allan Coe.Since the release of 2018’s Hard Times and White Lines—called his "finest set yet" by American Songwriter—Morgan has only deepened his impact, playing to packed clubs and sold-out theaters across the country. In 2024, he reached a defining milestone with his official debut at the Grand Ole Opry, a moment that signified more than just a career benchmark—it solidified his place in country music’s living legacy.Whitey Morgan’s creative resurgence came full force in early 2025 with the release of three new singles produced by Shooter Jennings. These tracks—gritty, soulful, and unmistakably Morgan—marked a powerful return to the studio. “Let Me Roll,” the lead single, set the tone with its raw heartland sound, followed by two equally compelling releases that proved Morgan’s songwriting is as vital as ever. Now, Whitey Morgan & the 78’s continue to push forward—onstage, in the studio, and on their own terms. With a loyal fanbase built one show at a time, Morgan remains one of country music’s most enduring and authentic voices—an artist for the outsiders, the true believers, and anyone who still finds salvation in a steel guitar and a hard truth.

Deep Blue Something is an American alternative rock band formed in Denton, Texas in 1993. the band is composed of Todd Pipes (vocals and bass), his brother Toby Pipes (vocals and lead guitar), Kirk Tatom (guitar and backing vocals), Clay Bergus (guitar and backing vocals), and John Kirtland (drums). The band is perhaps best known for their hit single "Breakfast at Tiffany's" which reached the top 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a global hit in 1995, culminating with a U.K. #1 in 1996. The band's music encompasses a range of styles, including dream- pop, alternative rock, pop, and post-grunge.The band's debut album, 11th Song, was released in 1993 followed by Home in 1995, Byzantium in 1998 and Deep Blue Something in 2000. Each album showcases the band's songwriting and musicianship, earning them a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim.Deep Blue Something has also earned a reputation as a dynamic and engaging live band, having toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. They have shared the stage with acts such as Oasis, Collective Soul, Phil Collins, Letters To Cleo, Alanis Morrisette, Adam Ant, Spin Doctors, Everclear, Manic Street Preachers, Cheap Trick, and ZZ Top, and have performed at major festivals such throughout the globe.Despite going on hiatus in the early 2000's, the band reunited in 2014 to perform a series of live shows and released the Locust House EP in 2020. With a renewed interest in touring, the band began recording a new album, Lunar Phase in 2024. The new album will be released by Flatiron Recordings in early 2025. While not a concept album, Lunar Phase was created with a very clear direction in mind. Instead of falling into the trap of trying to sound current, DBS decided to shape the sound of the record to feel as if it had been recorded in 1992—in the glory days of jangly underground guitar bands, from which the band had drawn so much inspiration when solidifying their sound. This was the time of Material Issue, Teenage Fanclub, The Charlatans, and Sugar—when everyone was waiting to see if The Stone Roses would ever make another record. . . before grunge took over. Drawing once again from these early sources of inspiration, Lunar Phase was created with that wonderful time in mind.Over 400 million streams on Spotify alone stands as a testament to Deep Blue Something's enduring appeal of their distinctive sound and style.

After a series of indie releases and growing buzz in the Atlanta music scene, Shawn Mullins’ critical and commercial breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. His song, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. His co-write “All in My Head” from 2008’s Honeydew was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” In early 2002, he formed supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge. “No Blue Sky” from the resulting album, is a modern day classic. For the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album, Shawn revisited the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He calls this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album is stripped down solo performances, some on guitar, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second is a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival.

David Nail’s candor cuts like a laser through star-making propriety, a ritual of predictable answers to predictable questions, recited by artists averse to the controversy that truth can bring.True, he is respected up and down and beyond Music Row. He’s written or co-written multiple hits. Critics laud his singing too: The late, revered Chuck Dauphin, for one, marveled at Nail’s ability to turn an “ordinary lyric and arrangement” into a “tour de force,” adding, “simply put… he is not one of us.”So he’s got rock-solid credentials. And he earned them despite a refusal to present himself in a false light. His songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. As Nail explains, it’s not so much an act of courage to write about depression and its effects. Rather, it is simply who he is; he says, in conversation and through music, what he must say.In Nail’s own words, “My philosophy has always been, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.”

DEAD - My Chemical Romance Tribute

21+ | 8pm Show / 7pm DoorsIt’s been 25 years since the release of “Teenage Dirtbag”, and somehow Wheatus’ now iconic debut single is arguably the biggest it’s ever been. And to celebrate this milestone, the band are touring the US and Canada in 2026 - playing their debut album in its entirety each night. The last few years have been a true whirlwind for the band. In 2022, Teenage Dirtbag became the cornerstone of a huge TikTok movement. The “Teenage Dirtbag photos” trend has now been embraced by nearly a million people, including celebrities such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Mark Ruffalo, Lil Nas X, Jon Bon Jovi, Chevy Chase, and countless others, resulting in the hashtag #teenagedirtbag being viewed over 2 BILLION times worldwide. And if that wasn’t enough, in 2023, it surprised everyone again by re-entering the UK Top 40 charts.Against all odds, this fresh frenzy around the 25-year-old anthem has led the band to recently perform on some of the most prestigious stages of their career: Wheatus have recently shared club, arena & festival line-ups across the world with the likes of Alice Cooper, Blondie, Busted, Everclear, Hoobastank, Living Colour, Phantom Planet, The Wallflowers, Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, The 1975, Muse, Jack White, Blink-182, Paramore, Coheed & Cambria, and so many more. In 2023, Wheatus embarked on what might have been an unprecedented 47 date tour of the UK and Ireland that was only a few tickets shy of completely sold out. They performed at Download Festival 2024 to an audience of over 20,000. Brendan B Brown also squeezed in a “Dirtbags Across America” tour, where he played intimate acoustic shows in 49 of the 50 states (Alaska - sorry, working on it). Most recently, Wheatus did massive tours of both the USA and UK with their old friends Bowling For Soup, to some of the largest sold out crowds both bands have seen in their entire careers. The final night of their upcoming tour will be a truly special gig with Bowling For Soup and Punk Rock Factory at the one and only OVO Wembley Arena in London - an absolutely perfect way to end this incredible year. After their 2020 plans were foiled by you-know-what, Wheatus are committing every waking moment of 2026 to traveling the world to celebrate the anniversary of their debut album that still means so much to so many. In addition to playing their full debut album each night they’ll also be taking fan requests for any other favorites from their three decade career - a ritual they’ve upheld at headline shows for almost 20 years now. It’s a joy to behold. See for yourself.

All material on this tour has never been featured before on any stand-up special or album.Judah Friedlander’s stand-up comedy is super funny. It is satire at its most creative, incisive, rebellious, and hilarious - but never preachy. It hilariously & profoundly satirizes the propaganda of American exceptionalism, empire, imperialism, and oppression - through one liner jokes and crowd work in a style all his own. He also does the same on a global scale, not limiting his critique to the USA. Judah also does material and crowd work that is absurdist comedy escapism - not necessarily of any political bend. His 84 minute stand-up comedy performance film from 2017, which he independently produced, directed, edited, wrote, and performed: “America Is the Greatest Country In the United States”, got rave reviews, with many critics & fans calling it the best of the year, and their favorite ever. This 2017 stand-up performance film continues to hold up well today & even back then in 2017 exposed Israel’s settler colonialism & occupation of Palestine. Judah finds and creates comedy from dark places most people would not think to consider looking into, and with his amazing and unique crowd work, no two shows are the same. Judah Friedlander is a unique & versatile performer & has won awards and accolades as both a comedic actor & dramatic actor. He has been in hundreds of television shows and over 40 feature films. For acting roles, he has often done deep character work, changing his appearance & voice so much that he is unrecognizable - as he did in “American Splendor” for which he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. Judah is also well-known for playing the dirtbag weirdo with a heart of gold “Frank” for all 7 seasons on the multiple Emmy-winning TV comedy “30 Rock”. Judah has also authored two books: the ridiclously funny instructional karate book “How To Beat Up Anybody”, and the absurd & satirical “If the Raindrops United”, a collection of his drawings & cartoons. Judah is touring with all new material that has not been released before on any album or special. He will be releasing more stand-up comedy performance films soon.

Virginia's Kendall Street Company are no strangers to having a wild time. The genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble has drawn varied comparisons to the dynamic jams of Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic, songwriting of John Prine, experimental psychedelia of Pink Floyd, progressive jazz-infused rock of Frank Zappa, and off-color humor of Ween and They Might Be Giants. Including elements of crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedic bits, haphazard choreography, musical improvisation, and surprise musical guests, each Kendall Street Company concert is an experience unlike any other. You'll laugh, you'll cry. Just remember to stay hydrated.

A multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and visual artist from Southern California, Cameron Lew has crafted his Ginger Root project steadily since 2017, inviting a fervent and growing legion of fans into storylines drawn across mediums: captivating albums with accompanying films and globe-spanning tours. The Ginger Root sound — handmade yet immaculately polished synth-pop, alt-disco, boogie, and soul — takes shape through Lew’s lens as an Asian-American growing up enamored by 1970s and ‘80s music, specifically the creative and cultural dialogue between Japanese City Pop and its Western counterparts from French Pop to Philly Soul to Ram-era McCartney. SHINBANGUMI, his long-awaited third LP, and Ghostly International debut set for physical release in 2024 with a visual album component, translates roughly to a new season of a show. It finds Lew more poised, idiosyncratic, and intentional than ever in a new chapter of life, unlocking “exactly what Ginger Root should sound and feel like,” he says. “In terms of instrumentation and musicality, it’s the first time that I felt very confident and comfortable with what everything should be comprised of. On the more personal side, I’m coming out of the last four years of writing, touring, and living as a different person; SHINBANGUMI is a platform to showcase my new self.”Since his first release of “aggressive elevator soul” music and dispatch from his beloved weekly YouTube cover series during college, Lew has captained the ship of Ginger Root, able to write, record, and mix the music while creating the art and videos from scratch. What makes Ginger Root special is the project’s ability to weave influence beyond pastiche into a bigger picture, exploring that rarified pop pleasure center where referential meets refreshing. In 2018, the project delivered its first album in collaboration with Acrophase Record, Mahjong Room, followed by several projects including the 2020 LP, Rikki. Between each move, Ginger Root has played alongside many modern Indie standouts, such as Khruangbin, Durand Jones, Omar Apollo, The Marias, and Hippo Campus. With much of Rikki’s release feeling lost to the moments of that year, Lew decided to take a step back and try to write a succinct project to engage listeners for as long as possible. His redirected energy, paired with the newfound influence of Japanese art and culture from his experience learning to speak the language, yielded City Slicker in 2021. On the strength of breakout songs like “Juban District” and “Loretta,” the project connected with a massive audience on the internet, with his YouTube amassing 160,000 subscribers and his Spotify nearly hitting 1 million monthly listeners.Ginger Root released the Nisemono EP in 2022 and has since played sold-out shows across North America, Europe, and Asia as fans await new music. In 2024, Ginger Root presents SHINBANGUMI across a sequential music video series, resuming the conceptual narrative from his 2022 EP Nisemono, which follows Ginger Root as a newly-fired music supervisor in 1987 starting his own media conglomerate, Ginger Root Productions. “If you watch music videos one through eight, you’ll be presented with a story that’s comparable to a traditional movie; something I’ve always wanted to do.”

In the middle of July 2023 in a Los Angeles studio, Deep Sea Diver mastermind Jessica Dobsontook a guitar solo but somehow felt nothing. Just days earlier, her Seattle band played a series ofsemi-secret shows for devotees at a hometown bar, de facto rehearsals for cutting a new record. The sets had gone well, but, almost immediately, the sessions didn’t. The songs’ essence seemedmuddled, Dobson’s conviction lost somewhere in the 1,000 miles between Southern Californiaand the home studio she shares with partner, drummer, and frequent co-writer Peter Mansen. Onthat first night in Los Angeles, she broke down, wondering what she was doing there, what herband could do to fix it. For the first time ever, Deep Sea Diver retreated, heading home withoutan album. Did they need to scrap it all, to begin again with new material? Not at all: Following a brief break, Dobson found a renewed sense of self, a trust in her visionfor her band and songs and her ability to capture them. After that Los Angeles hiccup, longtimecollaborator Andy Park asked Dobson how the new stuff was going over an early fall dinner. Sheadmitted she needed help. In that humbling confession, she soon found ways of working thathelped her reimagine and reinvigorate Deep Sea Diver and led directly to the power andbrilliance of Billboard Heart, Deep Sea Diver’s fourth album and first for Sub Pop. It is a coup, atriumph over self-doubt in which what first felt like failure became an opportunity to find newfreedom, belief, and strength. You can hear it in each of these 11 songs, the beating heart thatmakes everything here feel like a new anthem for finding your own way forward. The cocksure Bad Seeds swagger of “Shovel,” the tender mercies of “Loose Change,” theserpentine machinations of “Let Me Go,” where Dobson tangles with fellow guitar dynamoMadison Cunningham: Billboard Heart immediately puts Deep Sea Diver in the company of St.Vincent, TV on the Radio, and Flock of Dimes, bands that have found newly ornate andmagnetic ways to make indie rock by discarding notions of how it must sound or what it mustsay. Dobson punches through her past here. As she howls during Billboard Heart’s rapturous titletrack, she is “welcoming the future by letting go of it.”Exactly three years before Dobson’s galvanizing dinner with Park, Deep Sea Diver issued itsthird album, 2020’s Impossible Weight, via ATO, the colossal indie imprint that has helped MyMorning Jacket, Alabama Shakes, and King Gizzard build careers across the last quarter-century.It was a significant step up for a band that had self-released its first two LPs. The surge ofresources resulted in a groundswell of exposure, even a spot on Billboard charts. That success, though, caused Dobson to doubt her impulses, to begin thinking about what anidea’s impact or reception might be as much the strength of the idea itself. During this period ofsecond-guessing, she and Mansen sat near the wide windows of their Seattle living room, withher on piano as he hammered a guitar nearby. “See in the Dark”—a song about coveting yourown notions, despite the occasional sense they’re slipping away—emerged in that single sitting, its gothic elegance and pop grandeur proffering a blueprint for what else could come. That moment of domestic creation proved essential for several reasons. Before ImpossibleWeight, Dobson and Mansen wrote many of Deep Sea Diver’s songs together; this was a returnto that bond, which carried over to more than half of Billboard Heart. What’s more, the pairbegan recording more at home, too. They borrowed microphones and a small clutch of essentialgear to capture guitars and vocals in their basement. When talks later began in earnest with Parkfollowing the Los Angeles debacle, Dobson began revisiting those earlier recordings, realizingthat she had captured so much of that ineffable spark at home, where the atmosphere was of herown design. Mansen and Park helped convince her these weren’t just good enough to use butriveting in their realness. These early versions became templates and blueprints to build upon andframe, plus a way for Dobson to believe again in the material and, most important, herself. And from end to end, the material on Billboard Heart is astonishing. The title track is the onesong Deep Sea Diver actually finished in Los Angeles. It’s a radiant and magnificent thing, thebillowing synths of member Elliot Jackson and tunneling pedal steel of guest Greg Leisz pushingup an anthem for fearlessly advancing into the future, as best you can. “Emergency” linkshardcore’s famous vim to electroclash’s instant allure, Dobson’s italicized voice racing like agust of wind. Her brief guitar solo at the end is an all-timer, a few hiccupping notes suddenlymoving like a sports car in terrifyingly tight corners. Tender and vulnerable, “Tiny Threads” is asweeping anthem for anyone trying to hold anything together—life, love, themselves. “If ithaunts me, let it haunt me,” Dobson sings softly over a stillness framed only by bass and noise. She lets her guitar careen into feedback, then steadily sculpts it into something tuneful. It’s alifetime of anxiety and sublimation, crystallized into 10 seconds. Billboard Heart feels that wayat large. For a minute there, Dobson let that mix of art and commerce we call the music industry cloudher judgment and interfere with her impulses, a common enough story for anyone whose decadesof work suddenly yield success. She found her way out of that wormhole by embracing newness, whether that meant practicing songwriting as if it were collegiate homework, believing in herskills recording at home, or playing bass herself because the band had blown so much moneyduring those aborted Los Angeles sessions. (N.B. The big but elastic bass lines are a consistenthighlight here, so: good choice.)Mostly, she let go of the fear that comes when we think about our jobs, no matter what they are,and remembered that making music is less work than a way of reckoning and playing with theworld, of healing and finding other ways forward. Billboard Heart emerged when Dobsontrusted her instincts, a personal breakthrough that prompted an artistic one. It is, in turn, the bestDeep Sea Diver album yet, a defiant and brilliant exclamation mark at the end of a long period ofwandering.WWW.DEEPSEADIVER.COM

Bob Mould – Here We Go CrazyWhen he calls, Bob Mould is finishing work on his 15th solo album, Here We Go Crazy. A distillation of the unfailing melodic skill, the emotional lucidity and dynamic fluency he’s developed over more than four decades, it’s also a typically bold realignment of his sonic paradigm. Its turbulent vignettes are scored by Mould’s familiar bruised tunefulness, but the sound is pared back to its fundaments, 11 songs blistering past in just over 30 minutes. “I’ve stripped things back to what excited me as a young guitarist,” he explains. “The energy, the electricity.”Part of the inspiration for this more primal aesthetic is the heavy itinerary of touring he’s lately undertaken, several years spent circling the globe, either in the company of bandmates Jon Wurster (drums) and Jason Narducy (bass) or just by himself. “I was really throwing myself in the songbook and feeling where the audience is at,” he says. “And they were really responding to this very simple, just-me-and-a-guitar setup. And I thought, maybe I shouldn’t be overcomplicating things, ‘word’-ing or ‘craft’-ing it up. Just grab for the simple bits of life we still have control over: our emotions, our relationships.”After shows, Mould would hang out signing merch and talking to fans. “Sometimes people bring a lot of their lifetime emotional content to me,” he says, “like they’ve compressed all this coal into a tiny little diamond. Sometimes I’m surprised at the weight of it, the heaviness. I’m like, ‘I’m here for you. I’m listening.’ I’m shocked and grateful they share so readily with me. I don’t know what I did to earn that trust.”Mould has earned that trust with every record he’s made, channelling his own “lifetime emotional content” for songs of wisdom, honesty and volcanic intensity. His first band, Hüsker Dü, bared his angst over furious noise and turbulent melody, an indelible influence on generations that followed. But by the time Nirvana infiltrated the mainstream, Bob Mould had already moved on, having sequestered himself in a farmhouse to lick his wounds and learn new ways to sing his songs. His solo debut, 1989’s folk-rock masterpiece Workbook, was a record of depth and sophistication. Then he pulled another sharp turn, his power-trio Sugar alloying his most melodic songs with his fiercest noise, yielding his most commercially successful work yet. Over the solo career that followed Sugar’s own mid-90s flameout, he’s displayed a maturing gift for songwriting, transcending the ‘alternative’ tag and recognised alongside key influences like Pete Townshend and Pete Shelley. He’s adrenalized classic forms, alchemised angst into something addictive and powerful. “I’m just trying to figure myself out,” he says. “After 64 years of life – 55 spent writing songs – it’s what I do.” The concepts that shaped the songs of subsequent albums reflect those years. The ruminative Beauty & Ruin (2014) and Patch The Sky (2016) were written in the wake of losing his parents and other loved ones. 2019’s Sunshine Rock was a homage to the early Capitol singles of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, constant companions through his turbulent childhood. The terse, political Blue Hearts (2020) was written and recorded amid the dying days of the first Trump administration. Here We Go Crazy, meanwhile, arrives at another moment of uncertainty, a time of disruption and fear. Mould sees the songs unfolding like the three acts of a play, each act exploring distinct but related themes. The first handful of songs concern “control versus chaos”, Mould explains. The opening title track contrasts images of nature – deserts, mountains, fault-lines – with the tumult of human life. Inspired by a riff that Mould says “sounded like a fistfight”, ‘Neanderthal’ is “a snapshot from inside my head as a young kid: growing up in a violent household, everything being unsettled, feeling that fight-or-flight response at all times,” while ‘Breathing Room’ is “about feeling isolated, cramped-up, and literally needing that breathing space”. The furious, dynamic ‘Fur Mink Augurs’ signals the second act, where the darkness descends. The song channels claustrophobia, and “the cold, crazy, late-winter feeling I grew up with in the Adirondacks and in Minnesota. When the cabin fever really sets in deep – when the permafrost is set and it never gets warm – you become frayed, and things can really unravel, quickly.” ‘Lost Or Stolen’ chronicles lives undone by “people losing themselves in their phones,” Mould explains. From this focus, he pulls back and digs into “ideas about depression, addiction, self-medication and collapse… The words just fell out of me.” This anguished middle-passage of the album concludes with the cathartic ‘Sharp Little Pieces’, exploring “the end of innocence, the idea of a young child’s trust being violated. For those of us who lost trust as children, it disappears in a flash, and we spend years struggling to regain that innocence. And maybe it never comes back.”The song ends bluntly (Mould says the album’s “lack of sophisticated ornamentation is key – I was trying to stay out of the way of the songs, to strip away all the things I used to think were important, all those extra colours and complexities. I didn’t want to get deep into decorating the tree. I wanted to keep it simple, to use the simplest words”), raising the curtain on the closing act. The theme here is lifting oneself out of the darkness; ‘You Need To Shine’ is a song about “looking for the bright sides, the good parts of life, despite everything that’s happened”, Mould says, a sentiment borne out by the song’s spirited holler that “all that madness doesn’t matter anymore”. ‘Thread So Thin’ is “about trying to protect the one you love, and trying to feel protected”, Mould explains, while the closing ‘Your Side’ is a powerful love song from the edge of the darkness, Mould howling “If the world is going down in flames, I want to be by your side”. “We're heading into a great unknown here,” Mould says, of the wider geopolitical and climate anxieties that inspired these songs. The message here is, simply, focus on that which can save you and deliver you from this moment. “This album talks a lot about uncertainty, helplessness, being on edge,” Mould adds. “How much can we control? How much chaos can we handle? In the end, the answer, the remedy, is placing your trust in unconditional love.” Mould knows Here We Go Crazy is an album freighted with darkness; “There’s soothing melodies, and there’s lyrical discomfort,” he deadpans. “It’s manic, frantic, complex.” But no one ever came to Bob Mould for good news, for the easy answers. Pop music runs through his veins, as surely as the electricity that drives his chiming hooks into the realms of distortion, but he’s here to give you the truth, his truth. To give you songs that ring true when howled against a tornado of guitar, that compress all that “lifetime emotional content” into some kind of sonic diamond. There’s eleven of those precious gems here, sculpted to make the heaviness easier to bear, somehow. Treasure them.

21+ | 7pm Show / 6pm Doors“Produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Green Day, Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio, Amythyst Kiah’s new album Still + Bright explores the vast expanse of her inner world: her deep-rooted affinity for Eastern philosophies and spiritual traditions, a near-mystical connection with the natural world, the life lessons learned in her formative years as a self-described “anime-nerd mall goth.” In dreaming up the backdrop to her revelatory storytelling, Kiah and Walker arrived at a darkly cinematic and exhilarating twist on the rootsy alt-rock of her 2021 breakthrough album Wary + Strange—an LP that landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2021 and drew acclaim from major outlets like Pitchfork. With its sonic palette encompassing everything from fuzzed-out guitars and industrial-leaning beats to gilded pedal steel and Kiah’s exquisitely graceful banjo work, Still + Bright fully affirms her as an artist of both daring originality and uncompromising depth.““One of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.”— Rolling Stone“She really is important in reminding people that there is a great tradition of African-American, old-time musicians. I love that she sings in this really rich low vocal range, just straight from the chest, resonant.” — NPR“Her razor-sharp guitar picking alone guarantees her a place among masters, but it’s her deep-hued voice that can change on a dime from brushed steel to melted toffee that commands attention.” — The New York Times
