It’s not safety pins or green hair, and it’s not thick necks or masculine posturing. Instead, it’s defiantly genderqueer and untethered to any one style: glam rock flamboyancy, hardcore punk, regional sludgy grunge, metal’s intensity, and the melodic sensibility of jazz all find their way into the mix.But genre is a concept for the “mediocre millennial butt-rock rockers” that singer Meg Hall (they/she) chastises on live staple “Loser Sellouts.” Vibe is ultimately what matters now, and the vibe they bring to the table — especially at their chaotic, caustic live shows — is one of an impending apocalypse. As they became fast friends, the two started writing songs and playing music together using borrowed equipment and a toy drum kit. Their sophomore album The Greatest Part, released in 2020, was an indie rock opus that garnered acclaim from The New York Times, NPR, and more. After its release, however, Mancari was despairing. An illness in their family, coupled with a realization that their alcohol dependency had become untenable, led Mancari to begin the hard work of taking ownership of their existence by mending broken relationships and investing in their mental health. “I didn’t realize it then, but looking back, I was a passenger in my own life,” Mancari says. The transformative period of self-reckoning was the catalyst that ultimately steered Mancari to write and produce their triumphant new album, Left Hand.While Left Hand came out of a dark period in Mancari’s life, the album is anything but. Wide-open and welcoming, the music beckons all listeners, encouraging community among strangers. On the album, Mancari asserts a radical self-acceptance. The propulsive track “It’s Too Late” binds this new album to the hypnotic rhythms of The Greatest Part, and while the lyrics chronicle personal tragedy (“I almost drove off the road that night/ Did you know I almost did it so many times?”) the bass-driven groove is undeniable, luring us deeper into the album. The bold admission is but one example of the intimacy experienced throughout the record, suggesting that music, too, has been a part of their growth and healing expedition.Initially, Mancari planned to hire a producer on their third LP, just as they had done on earlier records, but a disheartening studio session convinced them they were capable of rendering their vision independently. Close friend and musical ally Juan Solorzano, who has played on all of Mancari’s albums since the debut of Good Woman in 2017, joined them in the studio to co-produce the majority of the record. In addition, Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves, Demi Lovato) co-wrote and co-produced the song “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” encouraging Mancari to track every instrument on the initial demos, and while they had never considered themself a multi-instrumentalist, Mancari took seat on the drum throne working out the skittering percussion of the tune until it hit just right. As much as self-producing this album was an act of resilience and growth in one’s own craft, Mancari brought trusted friends like Brittany Howard, who they play with in Bermuda Triangle, Julien Baker and Zac Farro into the process. “Producing this record was life-giving. It was scary, at first, to be trusted with this role, but I knew I’d only gain more agency and strength over my career through the process,” Mancari says.Insecurities that had dogged Mancari since childhood couldn’t weather the force of energy in that studio, where they executed decisions with newfound certainty. The title track, “Left Hand,” is named for the Mancari family crest from the Italian region of Calabria in which a left hand holds a dagger aloft. After a lifetime spent feeling like they didn’t belong, Mancari unlocked a perfect metaphor in the crest: “In many cultures children born with a dominant left hand were taught not to use that hand, and were told that using the right hand was ‘normal’ and ‘correct.’ Similarly, queer children are often times told that it’s not ‘normal’ for them to love who they love and that they need to ‘change.’”Though Mancari has experienced that alienation, “Homesick Honeybee” is a tender ode to their grandfather, whose voicemail opens the track and who was the first member of their family to wholly accept Mancari’s queerness. “When a bee loses its way, it can’t survive without a hive.” Mancari ponders, “It physically dies without its community.” But fortunately, their grandfather was always a supportive and reliable presence. You can hear the confidence and assuredness building in Mancari’s voice as they intone the opening verses over a bed of warm indie synths, and when the chorus hits, any sense of lostness explored in the lyrics is drowned out by the certainty of this confrontation: “How you gonna break my broken heart/ That’s already put back into so many pieces/ I can’t even feel it.”Ecological processes rely on interdependency and Mancari uses the natural world to emphasize their own reliance on other humans, and on the life-giving Earth itself. On the album’s striking closer, “To Love the Earth,” Mancari sings of a new commitment to an undefined spirituality. “Wanna crown you in Queen Anne’s Lace/ Wanna be rebaptized but in a different kind of way,” they sing. The song sounds like a rainy morning when there is no place to be but home and the slight pitter-patter against the windows brings comfort. Fingerpicked guitars and subtle percussion are overtaken on the chorus, which swells to a point of catharsis as Mancari surrenders: “Wanna love you forever, wanna love you forever.” The “you” is unspecified, applicable to a partner, to a community, to family, to the Earth that cradles us all. “To Love the Earth” leaves us with an overwhelming sense of peace, a feeling so rarely accessed outside of music.Left Hand is generous in this way; Mancari offers the listener a collection of songs that should be played in moments when we are in need of reassurance and encouragement. No song exemplifies this better than the ebullient track “Over and Over,” which is a reminder to friends that happiness doesn’t need to be fleeting. “I wanted to write a queer pop song that has meat on its bones,” they say. Inspired by one of many reckless and joyful hangs with dear friends in Nashville, the enlivening pop song makes a promise to them, and to the greater community Mancari embraces on this album. “There is something to the feeling/ Head hanging out of the window/ Being ok that we don’t know,” sung on the chorus over a beat replete with congas and shakers. Music, Hula &amp; Food for two nights in the heart of Downtown Bellingham for the Bellingham Exit Festival.&nbsp; <h2>CJ Helekahi</h2>Born and raised in Hana, Maui, the remote small town of approximately 2500 people on Maui’s scenic east coast, emerges a singer/songwriter named CJ Helekahi who has a sound like no other. CJ Helekahi comes from a very large and musical Hawaiian family with a long lineage of talented people. His Grandmother, the late Clara Tolentino, was a famous Hana entertainer, along with his Aunty G-Girl Keli’iho’omalu, a well-known recording artist, and his parents, Lovey and John Helekahi, renowned and long-time performers in Hana. There is a real pureness to CJ’s voice; an originality that could only come from a place like Hana. In this land of love of family and sharing, true community closeness and old Hawaiian ways are abound.CJ Helekahi, known to many as “Boom”, has gained a reputation far and wide for the beauty of his voice – from his soaring tenor to his caressing falsetto. He captures the heart of his audience regardless of what kind of music he’s singing or where he might be playing, whether that is at the beach with his ‘ohana or on the big stage. His love of all kinds of music is apparent in his versatility as an artist and songwriter and really comes from being raised in a place like Hana. CJ was always surrounded by kupuna playing country and old Hawaiian songs and he loves listening to all kinds of music and musicianship. Learning by listening so intently is what has made his sound so universal. <h2>Leokāne</h2>Born and raised in the mystical Mānoa valley on the island of O`ahu, Leokāne spent his youth gaining a love for the culture and music of the land of his birth. He shared this special love of Hawai`i with his parents. Jacques and Marianne Pryor moved to Hawai`i shortly after marrying in 1958. They followed other members of the Pryor family who had taken residence on O`ahu and in Kīpahulu, a remote area near Hāna, Maui. His father received a position teaching History at Punahou School, where Leokāne is now an Alumnus. His mother was from a small valley in Bavaria, Germany, arriving in Hawai`i speaking very little English. She was a shy, unassuming woman with a big smile and a kind and generous heart who was immediately embraced by the “locals” who spoke her language of aloha. Her close friends shared their love of their culture with her, teaching her their local dialect and traditional music, which she passed on to her son.Leaving Hawai`i for many years to pursue schooling and life experience, Leokāne temporarily let fade his special connection to Hawaiian music. However, other types of music began to influence his life, allowing him to better his vocal skills. Living in the Bay Area of California, though good for a time, was not Hawai`i, and it began to take a toll on him. When his mother fell ill from cancer, Leokāne began to record her favorite Hawaiian songs, mailing them to her when he could not be with her. Bittersweetly, she brought him back to his love for Hawaiian music. Her love for the Hawaiian Islands’ people, culture, and beauty made an indelible impression on Leokāne, which he carries forever in her memory. Leokāne’s most cherished possession is the gift his parents gave him by being raised with his sister in the safety and beauty of Hawai`i. The song, Nani Mālia, which he composed for his niece, is Leokāne’s expression of his love and respect for his ‘ohana – embracing all the generations of his family. Leokāne made his debut in the Hawaiian music world in 1999 with his successful CD release, Maunahele. Accompanied by his performance group, Pōhai Kealoha, Leokāne gained great popularity delighting audiences with his angelic falsetto vocals throughout the West Coast and Hawai`i. His first CD received wide radio play in Hawai`i, the mainland, and abroad. After frequent visits to Hawai`i and especially Hāna, the desire to return to Hawai`i became overwhelming. In 2004 he was able to move to Hāna, Maui, full-time. Home Malanai, Leokane’s second CD release in 2009, captures his love of Hana, Maui, with many original songs telling of his home in heavenly Hana and his love for Hawai`i. It features many exceptional talented musicians and composers - dear friends of Leokāne.

The rapper born Johnson Barnes and the DJ/producer born Aleksander Manfredi released Below the Heavens: In Hell Happy With Your New Imaginary Friend on July 17. Featuring soul-infused production with the raw vulnerability of Blu’s rhymes, the album began to receive rave reviews by hip-hop tastemakers and underground enthusiasts. In a review penned by 2DopeBoys’ Shake for HipHopDX, he gave it a 4/5 and noted that Blu is an “an extremely talented lyricist; clever rhymes, technically sound, intensely personal and witty.” Below the Heavens impacted everyone in some way, as it would later end up on many critics’ year-end lists from all over the internet.Compared to Blu, who was coming off his indie release California Soul and building his name in rap battle circles, Exile had already established himself with production credits on projects by Jurassic 5, Kardinal Offishall, Mobb Deep, among others. According to Exile, he was introduced to Blu through Aloe Blacc, who was the vocalist behind their group Emanon. “Aloe had actually met him first and Aloe had brought me over to see him perform,” Exile says of seeing Blu perform in L.A. in 2003. “It was just this hungry [MC], happy to be rocking on stage, and he was killing it.”Exile was so impressed by his performance that he wanted him to join Emanon as a hypeman, where he let Blu perform some of his solo work. At the time, Exile was also working on his Dirty Science compilation album. He recruited Blu as one of the featured rappers, giving him a batch of beats to rhyme over. Blu, who was already a fan of Emanon, liked that Exile’s sound was so sample-driven – a hallmark of hip-hop’s golden era. The pair got into the studio to create “Party of Two” (their first collaboration), “Maintain ft. Miguel” and “The Narrow Path.” Their good chemistry sparked the idea to make a full-length album together. “After that day, we knew we wanted to make an album with each other,” he says. “I remember being in the car after our session and just talking for a long time about the album and what we wanted it to be.”From then on, Below the Heavens slowly earned its reputation as a milestone for West Coast underground hip-hop, as it earned it’s spot on the greatest west coast Hip Hop albums of all time from , Rolling Stone, LA weekly and more, as well as delivering a pure and authentic experience for the Okayplayer heads. Although Sound in Color only pressed 3,000 copies back then and Below the Heavens suffered a premature leak online, the rarity of the physical CD added to the mythology of why people needed to cop and listen or face fear of missing out. Blu had a knack for grappling with his everyman struggles and conveying them in relatable detail, using Exile’s instrumentals as a vehicle for his emotions. When he touched on thoughts of hopelessness, frustration, love, or spiritual enlightenment, people certainly adored it because he was being so honest.“People loved those personal stories, all the braggadocio over soul samples, all the sincerity. No one looked at me as if I made a bad decision for making an underground record as opposed to something that could gain commercial success,” Blu said in an interview. “You feel the culture in the record … the nostalgia that makes you reminisce on those classic records. Sample static, drum breaks, raw lyricism and actual content — all for the West Coast.”During subsequent years, Blu would go on to land a spot on the 2009 XXL Freshman Class alongside rappers such as Wale, Kid Cudi, B.o.B, and Charles Hamilton, largely based on the success of Below the Heavens. Blu and Exile would reunite in 2012 for Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them that imbued the rapper’s multi-syllable style and the producer’s contemporary sound. Outside of their collaborative work, they have had fruitful solo careers too. Blu would drop countless mixtapes and EPs and continue to make one-producer albums with Bombay, Madlib, and Nottz. Exile Went on to produce another classic for another XXL Alumni with Fashawn’s Debut boy meets world, as well as a ground breaking instrumental project I EXILE RADIO, as well his work with Big Sean, which Khalifa Snoop Dogg, and producing more albums for his artist such as the album black beans by Choosey.2020 marked eight years since their last full length released in 2012, but in an effort to make up for lost time they are releasing a double album entitled “Miles” This 20 track album, released through Dirty Science Records, includes features from Blu‘s childhood friend, and now platinum recording artist Miguel, as well as Exile’s childhood friend Aloe Blacc, along with new emerging artists: The Last, Artful Dodger, Choosey and more, they ready to prove they haven’t missed a beat.Miles: From the Interlude called life is slated for an July 17th release. “We planted the seeds of creativity and grew about 40 plants,” Exile says of the release. “We picked the ones that we thought were the best for an album, but that didn’t mean that the other flowers weren’t beautiful.” 3 years since their release of “Miles” they are set to release their 4th full length album in 2024. Deltron 3030​ is composed of a trinity of alt-rap all-stars: Master lyricist Del The Funky Homosapien​, virtuoso turntablist DJ Kid Koala​ and superproducer Dan “The Automator” Nakamura​. Individually, they stand at the top of their respective musical disciplines; together, on the eponymous Deltron 3030, they warped space, bent time, transcended genre and blew minds, creating an album that still stands today as one ofthe most important records in the annals of underground hiphop. There are some places and moments that tie people together forever, whether it be a place,a song or something you can't quite define through words. The origins of Orions Beltestemmed from one of those mystical moments in time, which spawned a lasting creative connection. Øyvind Blomstrøm (guitar) and Chris Holm (bass) first met while playing in atouring band for another Norwegian artist. During that time, they bonded over their love for instrumental music and began talking about trying their hand at it themselves. After their work as touring band ended, they recruited drummer Kim Åge Furuhaug, one of Holm's longtime friend and collaborators, to join their new project. The three met in Bergen, located along the west coast of Norway, to start working on ideas and demos. Instead, within just a few days, they ended up recording their entire first album–Mint. From there, the universe propelled them forward, resulting in a record deal, their live debut as a band at Norway's biggest pop festival Øyafestivalen and the release of their debut record all happening within the following year. Mint drew international interest and praise from outlets including Atwood Magazine, who called the record "an eclectic fusion of disparate styles and exciting sounds that says what it wants to say through memorable melodies, ambient drones, and a stockpile of wicked guitar riffs." After their debut record, Orions Belte never slowed down. They had found their path, and nothing could stop them now. 2020 and 2021 will probably go down in history as two of the most challenging years for musicians in modern times. But despite it all, Orions Belte have managed to stay extremely busy. Ever since the release of the single “Bean” in April of 2020, the releases have been coming in a seemingly constant stream. Singles, EP’s, collaborations... They quickly followed up Mint with their funk-infused 2019 EP Slim, which features reimagined versions of Ghostface Killah's “Cherchez La Ghost,” Milton Nascimento's "Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser" and an original cut that pays homage to Norwegian beat group The Pussycats and the late Mac Miller. Amidst the unexpected chaos of 2020, Orions Belte kept the music flowing. They released another EP of inspired and experimental music, once again pushing the boundaries of what "instrumental music" can be. 600m per minute takes its name from an elevator in Tokyo, Japan that can transport 40 people at time at a maximum speed of 600 meters per minute. The supercharged, slightly nervous energy that the invention often evokes is mirrored in the EP's rocking title track, while "Orbit" brings a funky, worldly feel with a rhythm that urges you to move.&nbsp; Now, the trio is back with a new album that explores new creative and aural depths. Villa Amorini boasts the energy of a busy downtown sidewalk, with instruments intricately layered to draw you in and leave you wondering where it will lead. "It is certainly a bit darker and has a different vibe than Mint," Blomstrøm says. "Where the first album sounded like a breezy vacation at a lush resort with palm trees all around, this album might sound more like big city night life and chaotic afterparties." Named after a Bergen restaurant owned by Holm's family, which also became a hotspot in the 90s for live music and long nights, Villa Amorini is what the band calls "a homage to an era of loud music, club nights, ugly shirts and long afterparties." Recorded at Norsk Riksstudio by engineer Njål Paulsberg, the record brings listeners into sonic environments shaped and molded by each member's meshed unique talents. "We feel like we have a really strong connection between us," Blomstrøm says. "That's why we can write stuff on the fly and record whole songs in one take and use all the parts from all three of us." The dreamy pedal steel and gliding electric guitar of "Dearest" evoke the feeling of longing that comes when separated from loved ones back home. "Conversations" elevates the melodic accompaniment of breakthrough Norweigian talent Shikoswe, who provides an unforgettable guest appearance.&nbsp; Through each track of Villa Amorini, Orions Belte create soundscapes that pull you in and draw out emotions in ways that only they know how.
