But if it seems like an incredible road movie, a tall tale, a legend, it is no mystery. Michelle Shocked set forth on her adventure ever so young but ever so determined to jump past, jump through, jump beyond any boundary that held her back.The soaking humid Piney Woods swamplands of east Texas at the edge of the border with Louisiana was where she came from; born in Dallas and schooled in Gilmer. Raised in a large, extremely poor, strict fundamentalist Mormon household, her escape consisted of summers spent with her hippie-atheist father. She left home for good at 16. Putting herself through the University of Texas at Austin, with no financial support from her family, she graduated with a degree in Oral Interpretation of Literature. “It was the careerist ’80s, and that seemed like the least practical thing I could pursue,” recalls Shocked. After graduation, she hit the road, in customary Kerouac fashion. She rambled first to California, playing mandolin and fiddle in street bands, emerging as a staunch political activist first and foremost. Her persona was unadulterated punk rocker with a spiky mohawk and a ring in her nose. She hung out on San Francisco’s hardcore scene with MDC and the Dead Kennedys. Arrested at the 1984 Democratic Convention, a front-page news photo of her struggling with the police would ultimately serve as an album cover. Her mother would eventually commit Shocked to a mental institution against her will. “After 30 days, the insurance money ran out, so I was ‘cured’ and they released me.” Back on the street, dazed by the chemical straightjacket drugs given her by the mental health authorities, half-convinced that she was indeed crazy, she headed for New York City. What emerged isFloyd Mercantile— a record that feels both intimate and timeless.The makeshift studio was a decommissioned general store called (you guessed it!) Floyd Mercantile — a weathered wooden building standing across the road from an open pasture where cows wandered and grazed in the gentle early spring. (One cow even volunteered to be on the album cover.) Inside those old walls, the trio recorded the album live — no isolation booths, no heavy overdubbing — just three musicians in a room, listening closely and letting the songs unfold in real time.The sessions were recorded by Jeff Oehler and filmed in their entirety by partner Sue Bibeau and their associateSkylar Locke. Together, Sue and Jeff compriseBeehivePro, an audio, visual, and design collective famed for their intimate recordings and thoughtfully considered visuals.They captured not just the sound, but the atmosphere —the wood floors, the daylight through the dusty windows, and the creak of the porch boards could all be considered session players on this album.The repertoire bridges eras. Mostly comprised of songsPeter and Jenna wrote separately, there are a few gems from the Great American Songbook: “Skylark" (HoagyCarmichael/Johnny Mercer), “Them There Eyes" (Maceo Pinkard/Doris Tauber/William Tracey), and “I'll Be SeeingYou" (Sammy Fain/Irving Kahal).The visual and sonic tones of the project reflect the periods these songs evoke — even the newly composed tracks feel in conversation with another time. The goal was not nostalgia, but continuity: to stand inside the lineage ofAmerican song and add something honest and present to it.Floyd Mercantile is not just an album. It’s a document of place. WMSE Local / Live: THE DEMIX!

X-Ray Arcade presents...PIGEON PITOlympia DIY Folk PunkWALTER MITTY AND HIS MAKESHIFT ORCHESTRAOf all the ways for a band to rise out of a decade of silence, Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra sent their fans on a real life treasure hunt for their new album, “Yikes Almighty”. The album, an existential crisis set to sugary melodies, cowboy chords and children’s toy instruments, was dubbed to a single cassette and buried in a cave in the California desert. The band released a cryptic video that served as the treasure map with the message “if you find it, we will release it.”Though the bedroom folk punk outfit had not released music in 11 years, in actuality they have been consistently releasing and touring under the genre-defying umbrella name Walter Etc. When asked why the band is split into two identities, singer / songwriter, Dustin Cole Hayes, aka Walter, responded “my life is already such a mess, I decided I’d keep adding to the chaos.” It is Hayes’s cut-your-own-ear-off artistic sincerity that has made the Walter-verse and their art collective, Making New Enemies, fertile grounds for such strong mythology and deep connections. “Yikes Almighty” recounts a year of Hayes’s wandering, searching for home and stability, both physically and philosophically. For the past 36 years he has played all of Chicago’s heaviest showcase venues and toured much of the world with his super tight ensembles. Deeply rooted in the tradition of the Chicago blues elders with whom he worked and studied, Skoller has developed a unique style that conjures the past while being firmly planted in the present. His songs explore many of the issues and realities of life during this age of technology, information and horrific upheaval. Skoller, known for his fiery and engaging performances, combines passionate harp playing and singing with original song writing and prodigious production skills. He has self-produced 5 of his own critically acclaimed cds. As a producer he has produced 2 award-winning CDs by Lurrie Bell:&nbsp;Let’s Talk About Love&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Devil Ain’t Got No Music. Skoller penned the title cut of the latter which was nominated for&nbsp;Song of the Year&nbsp;by the Blues Awards in the US. MATT PRYORKansas City, Missouri native, Matt Pryor, is a household name for anyone who was attuned to the second and third waves of emo. His genre-defining band, The Get Up Kids, were among a small and legendary group that has shaped the musical landscape for years. However, after growing tired of the boundaries it so needlessly applied, the internationally recognized frontrunners eventually transcended the genre with their later albums and found themselves at home with a more indie sound.&nbsp;Most recently, on his latest album under his given name, Matt Pryor has presented the world with The Salton Sea, and it is abundantly clear that this is the continuation of a decades-long love affair with music and being outright obsessed with songwriting. Steadfast fans of Pryor’s prolific career will also find themselves treated to a style that is more reminiscent of the works of Paul Westerberg and Red House Painters, that is of course laden with Pryor’s signature style, whose DNA is deeply rooted in artists like Elvis Costello and The Afghan Whigs.&nbsp;It should be noted that the chosen title for the album is not one that was picked arbitrarily, and while not a concept album, the period of time when the songs were written were some of the darkest days of Pryor’s life. After spending six months in a downward spiral in what he sarcastically refers to as the penultimate moments of his “drinking career”, Pryor finally hit rock bottom. A casual habit that became a full-on addiction had officially come to a head, and in the blurry moments when 2022 became 2023, Pryor found himself with a choice that so many people before him have been forced to reckon with:&nbsp;Keep going on this path and face certain tragedy—or— Clean up, get sober, and stay on the right side of the dirt.&nbsp;Thankfully, Pryor decided on the latter, and the beautiful composite left on the shoreline for all of us to enjoy is the album now known as The Salton Sea. For those unfamiliar, The Salton Sea is what’s known as a “terminal” lake—meaning that new water never flows into it, and its salinity increases incrementally due to evaporation and pollution… The once high-spirited desert oasis was a tourist attraction for celebrities and the upper crust in the 1950s and 60s, and it is now a bona fide wasteland. It’s not difficult to imagine that while in the throes of addiction, Pryor saw himself as this once lush and vibrant body of water that years ago was referred to as a “California desert oasis”—but it is now an uninhabitable veritable shadow of its former self.&nbsp;Pryor’s latest songs have a timeless quality that makes you instantly nostalgic for strangers’ memories that unfold as narrative stories, and as a listener, you’re left wondering what these moments are all about—how will they unfold? This is undoubtedly due to the fact that along with sobriety, Pryor has found solace in writing for the sake of writing , a practice that he keeps up with daily—usually before dawn. In this talk, we explore how astronomers measure distances in the cosmos: from the Moon and our neighboring planets, to distant stars, galaxies, and even to the expansion of the Universe itself.
